2 Physical Science Lesson Plans February 27, 2012
OPENING: In the Interactive Notebook answer the question “What is the difference between something that is direct and something that is alternating?” EQ: What is electric current? GPS:S8P5: Students will recognize characteristics of gravity, electricity, and magnetism as major kinds of forces acting in nature. S8P1: Students will examine the scientific view of the nature of matter S8P5.c: Investigate and explain that electric currents and magnets can exert force on each other. WORK SESSION: Review /Discussion Gizmo from Thursday, February 23, 2012: Circuit Builder Notes and Discussion: Electric Circuits 1. Describe electric current. 2. Describe voltage and its relationship to electric current. 3. Describe resistance and its relationship to electric current. 4. Explain how a cell generates electrical energy. 5. Describe how thermocouples and photocells generate electrical energy. CLOSING: In the Interactive Notebook make a table comparing electric currents, voltage, and resistance HOMEWORK: Complete the Table started for the closing.

WORK SESSION: The Civil War Start the lesson with a Power Point explaining the Graphic Organizer from Friday “Civil war Strategies”. After the discussion have the students use page to complete the Graphic Organizer and Questions “Key battles of the Civil war” Have the students use the results of their Graphic Organizer to create a graph showing the Union and Confederate casualties for each of the key battles. Use the Power Point for a review and discussion. CLOSING: In your Interactive Notebook answer the following: Compare and Contrast the styles of battle strategies of Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant that were used in the Civil War. HOMEWORK: Complete any work not completed in class. Study for Vocabulary Quiz.

OPENING: Demo-Currents and Amps- Set up a 100 W light bulb at the front of the classroom and explain to students that the amount of current in the bulb is 1 amp. Guess how many amps used in the following: nightlight, projector, computer EQ: What are the features of the three important forces in nature: gravity, electricity, and magnetism? GPS:S8P5: Students will recognize characteristics of gravity, electricity, and magnetism as major kinds of forces acting in nature. S8P1: Students will examine the scientific view of the nature of matter WORK SESSION: “Jeopardy Game”- Review Electricity Unit Writing Prompts: Parallel and Series Circuits Static Electricity CLOSING: In the Interactive Notebook complete a Vocabulary and Sections Review- Write definitions of the key terms learned in the unit explain how they relate to the concepts in the unit. HOMEWORK: Study for Test on Electricity.

WORK SESSION: The Civil War Show the March to the Sea Georgia Stories video. Have students answer the questions on the Sherman’s March to the Sea Worksheet. Discuss student answers. Distribute Sherman’s March to the Sea Worksheet. Ask students to create symbols representing the industries found in these cities and to answer the discussion questions about the map. Go over answers with students when completed. Explain to students that they will work with a primary source about Sherman’s March, Interpreting Sherman’s Letter to James M. Calhoun et al. Tell students that this was a letter written by Sherman himself; justifying why he attacked the city of Atlanta.
