1 Monday, March 13th Entry Task Describe 3 kinds of technology or equipment used to explore the ocean Schedule: Ocean current notes Objective: I can understand that ocean water moves in currents Homework: Finish Notes and 13.2 Questions Please have on desk: ISN open to ocean floor drawing

2 Tuesday, March 14th Entry Task From page 454 in your book, copy the 5 items in the Key Concept Summary for 13.1 and 13.2 Schedule: Dead Zones Article Objective: I can understand how movement of ocean water affects the environment Homework: Finish Dead Zone questions if not completed in class Please have on desk: ISN open to currents

3 Happy Pi Day

4 As you read “Dead Zones”
Highlight important information Circle Vocabulary words Words: fresh water, salt water, water cycle, evaporation, condensation, precipitation, salinity, density, continetal shelf, sonar, ocean current (or just current), downwelling, upwelling, El Nino Make annotations At least 10 Thought, feelings, questions, summarize

5 What is causing crabs, sea stars and sea anemones to die off the coasts of Oregon and Washington?
What does hypoxia mean? Hypoxia is a common thing in deep oceans, why are scientists concerned about the most recent discoveries involving hypoxia in the world’s oceans. How is hypoxia related to global warming? What happens if the pattern continues? What DID scientists think is the cause of the ocean “dead zones?” Now what do scientists say the dead zones (including those off the Northwest coast) might be linked to? What are some other explanations that some scientists might attribute the lower oxygen levels to? Do all of the scientists agree? What other information do YOU think would be necessary for scientists to all agree on what is causing the oxygen level differences? Why does the lower amount of oxygen affect some species more than others?

6 Wednesday, March 15th Entry Task
Copy and answer these on your entry task brochure A mass of moving water is called a __________ Surface currents are caused by ______ blowing across the ocean Deep currents are caused by differences in the ________ of water. Schedule: Tides Objective: I can understand that water rises and falls in tides Homework Finish reading 13.4 and 13.4 Notes Please have on desk: Dead zone questions

7 Thursday, March 16 Entry Task Explain how the Moon’s gravitational pull on Earth causes tides. Schedule: Shallow seas Objective: I can review information about Earth’s shallow seas Homework: There is no homework Please have on your desk: NOTHING except your pencil and entry task brochure

8 Friday, March 17 Entry Task What is the difference between a dugong and a bottlenose dolphin? Schedule: Tides notes Tides activity Objective: I can understand and demonstrate how water rises and falls in tides Homework Complete Tide Activity Questions Please have on desk: Shallow Seas handout

9 Tides Earth System Earth’s role in Space
Geosphere, Hydrosphere, Atmosphere, Biosphere Hydrosphere Water Cycle Most water on earth is in oceans Oceans rise and fall in tides due to the gravitational pulls of the Earth and Moon Earth’s role in Space

10 Tides Notes

11 Tides Notes Tides are the vertical movement of water, the rise (flood) and fall (ebb) of water in large water bodies. Tides are most noticeable along continental shorelines.

12 Tides Notes Tides occur because the Moon’s gravity changes the shape of Earth’s oceans. Moon low tide High tide rotation of Earth

13 The attraction causes the oceans to bulge out in the direction of the moon.
Another bulge occurs on the opposite side, since the Earth is also being pulled toward the moon (and away from the water on the far side). Tides Notes

14 Since the earth is rotating while this is happening, two tides occur each day.
