Transportation Alternative Program Program Overview: On January 27, 2017 TxDOT released a call for projects Funding is provided to construct a variety of alternative transportation projects that improve mobility for non-motorized users and mitigate congestion by providing alternative transportation options $52 million is estimated for population areas under 200,000

Transportation Alternative Program Projects should strongly encourage the following: Enhance bicycle and pedestrian safety for people of all ages and abilities Improve safety, access, or mobility for individuals with disabilities Construct on-system improvements in support of TxDOT’s ADA/Pedestrian initiatives Provide access to or between existing bicycle and pedestrian facilities, public transportation, or mobility options Connect important community destinations Contribute to the development of a statewide or regional bicycle route for tourism Contribute, as an independent element, to a larger public project/investment

4 Proposed Project: Sidewalks along South 31st Street, from Adams Avenue to Blue Meadow Drive By filling in “gaps” in the system, this project would provide for nearly 4.5 miles of contiguous sidewalks along a major commercial/residential corridor

5 Current Conditions: Unsafe conditions, pedestrians use the street whether walking or on a motorized scooter Crosswalks lead to nowhere New development is filling in some of the areas, but older development is not Cow paths, citizens currently walk where they want and make their own path Small gaps between development

6 Proposed Improvements/Benefits:
6’ Sidewalk provisions, on at least one side Enhanced aesthetics Improved connection, accessibility and safety Increased connection for nearly 8,600 households Nearly 4.5 mile contiguous sidewalk Improved bridge design for pedestrian use
