Words that ask questions

2 Where vs. Where Dónde – used to ask location Use the verb estar:
estoy, estás, está, estamos, están Example: Where are you (s. fam)? -¿Dónde estás tú? A dónde – used to ask where someone is going Use the verb ir: voy, vas, va, vamos, van Example: Where are you (s. fam.) going? -¿A dónde vas tú?

3 Which vs. Which Cuál / Cuáles Which + of + noun Example:
Which of the pencils are yours? -¿Cuáles de los lapices son tuyos? Qué Which + noun Example: Which pencil do you like? -¿Qué lápiz te gusta?

4 What vs. What Cuál / Cuáles – used before ser to gain general information Example: What is your phone number? -¿Cuál es tu número de teléfono? Qué – used before ser for a definition or explanation Example: What is Facebook? -¿Qué es el feís?

5 How vs. What Cómo – generally is used to ask how Example: How are you?
-¿Cómo estás? Cómo – is used as what to ask the following questions Examples: What is your name? -¿Cómo te llamas? What are you like? -¿Cómo eres tú?

6 How much vs. How many Cuánto – Means “How much” and is NOT the singular form of cuántos. Example: How much is the iphone 5c? -¿Cuánto cuesta el iphone 5c? Cuántos – Means “How many” and is NOT the plural form of cuánto. Example: How many brothers do you have? -¿Cuántos hermanos tienes tú? How old are you? -¿Cuántos años tienes tú?

7 Who vs. Whose Use who when you are seeking a name.
Quién – singular form (just one person) Quiénes – plural form (more than one person) Examples: Who is the pretty girl? -¿Quién es la chica bonita? Who are the pretty girls? -¿Quiénes son las chicas bonitas? Use whose when you are seeking the owner. De quién – singular form (just one person) De quiénes – plural form (more than one person) Examples: Whose cat is this? -¿De quién es este gato? Whose cookies are these? -¿De quiénes son estas galletas?

8 When Cuándo Example: When do you study? -¿Cuándo estudias tú?

9 Por qué vs. porque Por qué – asks the question, “Why?”
It is two separate words and has an accent mark Example: Why don’t you do your homework? -¿Por qué no haces tu tarea? Porque – means because It is one word, no accent marks Example: Because I don’t want to. -Porque no quiero.
