Tuesday, December 12: Explain how scientists know what elements distant stars are made of.

3 9.2 Exploration of the Solar System
We’ve studied solar system objects to look for visual evidence of water. We used a spectroscope to understand how we can study light from distant objects to look for water. Today we’re going to learn about space missions that have taken place or are planned for the future in order to consider what scientists have learned during their hunt for water in the solar system.

4 9.2 Focus Question page 113 We have been focused on looking for water in the last few days, but lets broaden our investigation. What are the big questions that guide space explorations? We worked on one of the big questions in astronomy when we worked with the Solar System Origin cards a few days ago: How did the solar system form, and what caused it to form that way? Today we are going to review some of the big questions that NASA missions have answered over the years, or hope to answer in the future.

5 Science Resources Open your books to “Space Missions”
These pages show some of the past, present, and future missions that have or will pursue some of the big questions about the universe. There are 8 categories into which the missions have been grouped: asteroid, comet, outer solar system, Mars, Moon, Mercury and Venus, Sun, and space telescopes.

6 4. Discuss facts learned Make a list of the top three most interesting facts you learned from looking through the missions. Write them at the bottom of your focus question You should:

7 7. Astro Blog As of the printing, some of the missions have not yet completed collecting data. Revisit your focus question, add any new ideas. What are the big questions that guide space exploration?

8 10. Nature of Science We live in an exciting time because we have constant data coming in from ongoing missions. Perhaps in your lifetime we will find liquid water, and maybe even signs of life, on a distant solar system object or beyond. We’ve sent scopes and rovers throughout the solar system, but so far, humans have landed only on the Moon. However, light data brings us images and information from distant areas of the universe. The Hubble Space Telescope has produced some famous images that you might have seen.

9 10. Nature of Science Discuss why you think answers often lead to more questions that need to be answered. This is the nature of science and scientific inquiry—the more you know about something, the more questions you have.
