Presentation on theme: "Cohort 8 Capstone Kick-off"— Presentation transcript:

1 Cohort 8 Capstone Kick-off
Do now: Write your “burning questions” about capstones on the index cards at your table (one question per index card). Try to think of at least 2 questions, but feel free to write as many as you can.

2 Table Talk With your table, discuss 1-2 of your questions. Notice, what questions overlap? What questions are new? Keep your questions in front of you. As they are answered, write the answers on the reverse side of the index card. 8 minutes of talking, ~2 min of share out; one question in common

3 Agenda Capstones Recap (10 min) Workshop C7 Capstones (20 min)
3 C8 Capstone Process (15 min) 4 Next Steps & Open Questions (10 min.) 15 mins in do-now and table talk 5 Look Back or Look Ahead (20 min)

4 Recap: What is a Capstone?
Your culminating deliverable for the SDP Fellowship demonstrating an outstanding application of strategic data use

5 A Capstone is a project that is…
Aligned with agency priorities Useful for the field Inspires others to do similar work Grounded in practical experience But it’s also more than that…

6 A Capstone is three pieces…
Analytic Project Impact Story Presentation

7 Analytic Project An Analytic Project is a project promoting strategic data use, or that convenes stakeholders around data in new ways. Projects can take many forms including: An impact evaluation of key initiatives A guide to implementing a novel measure Implementing new performance management routines Data dashboards and training routines And more!

8 Presentation Each fellow will be responsible for presenting their project to their fellows and the network at graduation/ convening next year. You’ll see two capstone presentations over the course of convening. Observe the content, but also the format – what would you duplicate or do differently?

9 Impact Story Each fellow is also responsible for telling the story of their project’s impact. These stories are relatively short (~5 pages), and you’ll get training on writing for impact at September workshop. Disclaimer: you’re our field testers

10 Your Capstone …is just that, your capstone. It is an individual project, and you’re accountable to each deliverable.

11 “Our” Capstone …is just that, your capstone. It is an individual project, and you’re accountable to each deliverable. But we welcome collaboration, and give you access to feedback and peer resources at every step of the way. Your capstone working group and your faculty advisor will be two key resources over the next year.

12 First Steps on Your Capstone Journey
Convening Learn about the capstone process in-detail. Proposal Submit a capstone project proposal to Rebecca by June 19. Proposal Review Receive feedback and sign-off on project proposal in quarterly check-in (6/26–7/28) Resource Matching Get matched with a faculty advisor and your capstone working group. 4 3 2 1

13 Pause and Reflect Look down at the questions you wrote down at the beginning. Which critical questions still don’t have an answer?

14 Activity: Workshop C7 Capstone Proposals
On your tables are capstone proposals from C7 Fellows. Spend 3 minutes reading one proposal and discuss: What was the capstone about? How did they touch on impact and the project itself? In what ways did the capstone set out to fulfill the mission of SDP? At the end of 15 minutes, we’ll ask your table to share its favorite. 5-10 minutes of shareout; turn on timer Reminder: you’ll see these at convening so keep an eye how the work has evolved, or how it is being presented.

15 The Capstone Process: End Game
By your graduation, all three pieces of the capstone project will be due. This includes: The project for your agency The written story of your impact A presentation to the network The date of graduation (and convening 2018) is still TBD. May/June 2018

22 Looking Back Looking Ahead
Huddle up with your dilemma group from Winter Workshop. You will have ~20 minutes to work together. Decide as a group whether you want to look back or look ahead. Looking Back Looking Ahead Revisit the Huddle Dilemmas if someone in your group didn’t get to present, or if someone has a substantial update. Sample huddle protocols are available, but you’ll need to modify them to work in the time allotted. Discuss your current capstone ideas. What types of projects are you considering? How well do they fit the capstone goals? What types of support (from your working group or your faculty advisor) would you need? Can’t leave the room, sorry.
