1 Implementing Change in Pedagogy
Nationally teaching loads are going to increase and oversight is going to increase, need to encourage our administrators we are going to lead the charge with pedagogical quality Promote evolution in pedagogy via small chunks with recognized early successes—help to broaden application of best practices Making significant changes in pedagogy requires little effort Demonstrate “low hanging fruit” in your department Streamline/simplify online tools? Identify/acknowledge/celebrate tools that faculty are likely already using Hold workshops or semester long pedagogy course for new graduate students Multiple opportunities for graduate students to teach and mentor both on disciplinary and interdisciplinary basis Encourage Cutting Edge/IRIS workshops for Early Career and future faculty Place Dave McConnell’s course online/use CIRTL online resources Hosting traveling workshop on pedagogy Making good assessments and ways of implementing them and developing a national network of assessment (Cutting Edge/InTeGrate efforts (GLE survey) already exists)

2 Technology Technology is a critical tool, but doesn’t replace direct interaction Technology provides unique capability to bring spatial information into the classroom – but students still need to make paper sketches/estimates – should be an interactive exercise The biggest value-add from interaction is in modeling how to think about processing information and solving problems Technology includes online instruction and new video technology, visualization, large data Encourage application of new technologies by faculty and grad students Train graduate students in on-line instruction Develop best practices for on-line instruction. Can we map them from the classroom? Do students learn differently today as a result of technology? We need to determine what is effective for them online Conduct research on learning-with-technology in Earth sciences, assess student learning and disseminate results broadly Determine effectiveness of online education at different levels (gen. ed, core)
