Interracial Relationships

Today many of us may think that no one has a problem with interracial marriage anymore. We think no one could possibly have that mindset in this day and age. Sadly we are mistaken. There are plenty of people in the world who still have a problem with someone marrying another someone who has different color skin than them. To some people it sounds ridiculous and others agree. Personally I think anyone should be able to marry anyone they want to.

The Movies There are many movies that fully show the issue that people have with someone marrying someone of a different color. We’ve all seen a movie about a black man who brings a white woman home and the whole family has a problem with it. We have also seen movies about a white man who brings a black woman home and everyone’s got a problem with it. It does not matter the combination of skin color or gender but someone typically has a problem with it on the big screen. In the movie Lakeview Terrace there is a black man that lives next door to an interracial couple who will stop at nothing to get them to move out.

8 Questions Interracial Couples Are Tired of Hearing is an article from Huff Post that discusses questions that people in an interracial relationship are tired of hearing. They feel that the questions are pointless and can even be offensive. It is unnecessary to ask a couple about their racial differences. If you saw a couple of two white people you wouldn’t ask “So what’s it like to date someone of the same race?” so why do people feel the need to ask interracial couple what it’s like to date someone of a different race?

Interracial Marriage

Family My mom is white and is married to my dad who is Mexican. One year one of my cousins brought her boyfriend to a family function in Chicago where my dad’s side of the family lives. My cousin is Mexican American and her boyfriend was fully white. It’s not that my family actually had a problem with the color of his skin; at least I don’t think they did, but they rarely stopped referring to him as the “white boy” the entire time we were there. I just didn’t get why they could never she see him as a person and not the color of his skin. It was also difficult because my dad doesn’t act the way they did so I just couldn’t see why they felt the need to. My mom has also told me that she had similar situations when she first married my dad.

Interracial Relationships That Changed History
Pbs.org posted an article telling the story of several interracial couples who have helped to change history. Mildred and Richard Loving: A couple who was taken from their beds and thrown in jail for the “crime” of getting married. Mildred was a black woman and Richard was a white man. “In 1963, they approached the American Civil Liberties Union to fight their case in court. After an extensive legal battle, the Supreme Court ruled that laws prohibiting interracial marriage were unconstitutional. Although such laws officially remained on the books in several states, the Lovings’ landmark victory rendered them effectively unenforceable, ensuring nobody else would have to endure the same treatment.” Louisa and Louis Gregory: The first interracial Bahá’í couple
