When: October 17th, 18th, and 20th (Jenckes Cup: Nov. 18th) Time: 6:30 – 9 PM Location: Arizona Center for Law & Society Sign ups Open: Today! (9/26) Close: (10/8) Problem Release (10/9)

3 How It Works Teams of two give a 15 minute closing argument
Typically 7 ½ mins a person Judges act as a Jury Closed Universe Problem (no outside jury instructions/statutes) PPT, props, and visual aids encouraged! Judges like extras if helpful us in advance if using one of the above

4 Judges are looking for…
Organization Theme & Prayer No “may it please the court.” Quick Facts Main Argument (deal with weaknesses, too!) Applicable Statutes / Jury Instructions End strongly and let it linger in air. Don’t say “Thank you.” Oral Advocacy Skills Tone, pacing, gestures, voice, courtroom manner, persuasiveness Teamwork Team chemistry, synergy

5 How to Prepare Know facts cold Develop Theme
Simple, few-word sound bite that anchors the case Ex: Seven steps… Seven steps is all it took. Write out Bullet Point Structure (NOT PROSE) Don’t rely heavily on your notes Practice out loud in front of friends, family etc. Time yourself Videotape yourself Nervous habits “Um…” Hands Posture
