1 Food Chains and Food Webs
Producers and Consumers Food Webs 2015

2 Warm Up November 17 Describe the role that the Environmental Protection Agency plays in the protection of the Earth’s waters. Which process is used to remove dust and other pollutants from in your drinking water? One of the final steps in treating our drinking water is to add chlorine. What does adding chlorine do to our water? Objectives: 8.E.1.1/1.2/1.3/1.4 -TSWU the difference between producers and consumers. -TSWU the difference between food webs and food chains. Essential Question: -How do food webs differ from food chains?

3 WHAT LIVING THING IS NECESSARY FOR ALL LIFE ON EARTH? PART 1
Think, pair & share…

4 PLANKTON

5 microscopic aquatic plants
Not just any plankton…. PHYTOPLANKTON microscopic aquatic plants

6 PHYTOPLANKTON photosynthesizing microscopic aquatic creatures
Not just any plankton…. PHYTOPLANKTON photosynthesizing microscopic aquatic creatures They produce their own food!

7 They photosynthesize like TREES!
Taking away CO2 we exhale and giving us O2 to inhale!

8 They photosynthesize like TREES!
Taking away CO2 we exhale and giving us O2 to inhale! And make/produce their own SUGAR for food

9 Sponge bob’s plankton can’t produce his own food….(he’s a zooplankton)

10 GIVE US MORE OXYGEN than TREES!

11 Use your technology or the iPads in pairs… PART 2 Get to this website and find 4 types of phytoplankton in your notes.

12 Use your technology or the iPads in pairs… Get to this website and find 4 types of phytoplankton in your notes. CYANOBACTERIA GREEN ALGAE diatoms dinoflagellates Know these two!

13 On Monday you will be making your own marine food web.
What’s a food web? They are the BASE OF MOST FOOD CHAINS AND FOOD WEBS!

17 Discussion Questions Directions: Write and answer the following questions on separate sheet of paper. How do food chains differ from food webs? What is the relationship between food chains and food webs? What is the difference between a producer and a consumer? Can a consumer be considered both prey and a predator? What is the difference between phytoplankton and zooplankton?

18 Today we will be looking a little closer at producers and consumers as well as food chains and food webs. What the difference between a producer and a consumer? What’s the difference between a food chain and a food web?

19 Food Chains and Food Webs
Producers Consumers Producers- plants, algae, and other organisms that use photosynthesis to produce their own energy Producers also include organisms such as chemosynthetic bacteria found at the bottom of the ocean. Chemosynthesis Consumer- organisms that get their energy from plants Consumers are also organisms that feed on smaller plant-eating organisms Consumers – may also eat the larger organisms that feed on the plant eating organisms.

20 Today you will be making your own food web.
What’s a food web and food chain? Food chain – shows a single feeding relationship in an ecosystem. Food web – shows multiple feeding relationships in an ecosystem. Made up of many smaller food chains. The arrows on the food webs and chains point toward the thing that does the eating!

21 Today we will be creating food chains and a food web.
Begin by making a single food chain starting with a producer. Remember, arrows point toward the thing that does the eating! All of your organisms must be aquatic here. After we discuss your initial food chain, create two more food chains side by side. You must have at least 3 producers at the bottom of your marine food chains(things that make their own food…like certain plants & phytoplankton) You must have at least 9 (total) other aquatic organisms that are connected to your food chains. Now lets draw arrows indicating which organisms eat what. You have created a food web!

22 On Monday you will be making your own marine food web.
FOOD WEBS SHOW the RELATIONSHIPS between the EATERS & WHAT THEY EAT! On Monday you will be making your own marine food web. What’s a food web?

23 On Monday you will be making your own marine food web.
What’s a food web? PHYTOPLANKTON & plants make up the BASE of most FOOD WEBS because they don’t eat, they are just eaten.

24 Why?

25 Yes, they make their own food!
Not just any plankton…. PHYTOPLANKTON photosynthesizing microscopic aquatic creatures Yes, they make their own food!

26 ARROWS POINT TO THE EATERS!
REMEMBER IN FOOD WEBS… ARROWS POINT TO THE EATERS!

27

28 Create your Own Food Web
What should it have? Arrows point toward the thing that does the eating! 15-20 types of living things (more species names, the better!) You should include both aquatic and terrestrial species in your food web. Include at least one type of phytoplankton (no arrows should point to it because it doesn’t eat anything else)! Remember, producers are always found at the beginning of the food chain/food web.
