2 Bellringer Kenning: A kenning is a miniature riddle, a poetic synonym, a descriptive phrase or compound word that SUBSTITUTES FOR A NOUN. Look at the following examples from Beowulf: “the Almighty’s enemy” and “sin-stained demon” To whom do these kennings refer?

6 Characteristics of an Epic (page 29)

9 HOMEWORK Define the 15 “Words to Know” found on page 30. Write a nursery rhyme (or a series of nursery rhymes) using 10 of the 15 words. Underline the words in your rhymes.

10 HOMEWORK Example There once was a girl who had an affliction: she talked and she talked with really bad diction. She would make her lament, that she lived in a tent, and was livid because she had not a cent.
