THE ORIGINS OF A NATION Anglo-Saxons (449-1066)

With a partner, define the following words. If you do not know them, make your best EDUCATED guess. An educated guess begins with identifying prefixes, suffixes or root words. When all else fails, decide if the word resembles any others that you may know. Barbarism Chieftain Genesis Province Urban

Write down the real definition. You will be responsible for knowing these words, their correct spelling and correct use. Barbarism- uncivilized or primitive in behavior Chieftain- chief or leader Genesis- origin or beginning Province- a region or country controlled by the ancient Roman government Urban- relating to a city

Your job: You will create an outline for FIVE sections of text on the Anglo-Saxons. Do not assume that your task is simple or easy. Your outline will prove to be useful to you later! Here is an example to help get you started: 1. Historical Context A. Centuries of Invasion 1. Early Britain -Invaded by the Romans, post Caesar 2. Anglo-Saxons 3. Vikings

Solve this riddle. When I am alive I do not speak. Anyone who wants to, takes me captive and cuts off my head. The bite my bare body. I do no harm to anyone unless they cut me first. Then I soon make them cry.

The Answer…

Interesting Facts: The Anglo-Saxon home could house ALL of the living relatives in one “house.” The home was ONE ROOM. Everyone ate, slept and played in the same room. This lone room had a hearth that provided the only source of heat, light and means of food preparation for the ENTIRE family. The home would be made out of wood and it would have a thatched roof. Most people farmed their land and provided for their families that way. Some Anglo-Saxons had a trade or skill i.e. blacksmiths, jewelers, cobblers or millers. They loved riddles.

You should be able to discuss or answer questions about the following topics with your outlines: Life in the Dark Ages Effect of Rome’s departure from Britain Anglo-Saxon contribution to culture Describe the Vikings Identify Edward the Confessor, the Norman Conquests and the successor of the throne Define wyrd. Effect of Christianity on the Anglo-Saxons Identify the most significant piece of literature to survive the Anglo-Saxon period Language of most original works Social classes of the Anglo-Saxons

The Spread of Christianity Cultural Influences 1) The Spread of Christianity  Wyrd  Bleak Anglo-Saxon beliefs  Changes Christianity brought and who spread Christianity  Augustine/Canterbury  Monasteries-what were they and what did they offer?  Venerable Bede  A History of the English Church and People  Vikings strike again

The Epic An epic is a long narrative poem that celebrates a hero’s deeds. Epics were often based on historical fact. Two examples of repeated elements in oral poetry are stock epithets and kennings. Stock epithets are adjectives. An example of a stock epithet is “swift- footed” used to describe Achilles in the Iliad. A kenning is synonym—a descriptive phrase or compound word that substitutes for a noun. An example of a kenning is“the Almighty’s enemy” and “sin-stained demon” which are both used to describe Grendel.

The Epic Hero An epic hero has the following qualities: a. of noble birth or high position and often of great historical or legendary importance b. exhibits character traits that reflect important ideals of society c. performing courageous, sometimes superhuman, deeds that reflect the values of the era d. performing actions that often determine the fate of a nation or group of people

Shared elements of an Epic These are elements shared by most epics. Write a definition for each term. The setting is vast in scope, often involving more than one nation. The plot is complicated by super natural beings or events and may involve a long and dangerous journey through foreign lands. The dialogue often includes long, formal speeches delivered by the major characters. The theme reflects timeless values, such as courage and honor, and encompasses universal ideas, such as good and evil or life and death. The style includes formal diction (choice of words and sentence structure) and a serious tone (the writer’s attitude toward the subject).

You will not be forced to share; however, I will ask for volunteers and when I do a BW check next week I will read what you wrote. Here are your choices:  There is good in everyone.  Evil is lurking around every corner.  An eye for an eye.
