1 Solubility -the ability of one substance to dissolve in another
If you’re not part of the SOLUTION, You’re part of the PRECIPITATE!

2 Solubility Solubility – the ability of a solute to dissolve in a solvent If a solute WILL dissolve in a solvent – SOLUBLE Sugar dissolves in Water Ink dissolves in Alcohol If a solute WILL NOT dissolve in a solvent – INSOLUBLE Oil does not dissolve in Vinegar Styrofoam does not dissolve in Water

3 Factors Affecting Solubility
Nature of Solute & Solvent “Like dissolves Like” Polar Substances will dissolve in Polar Solvents Nonpolar Substances will dissolve in Nonpolar Solvents Polar AND Nonpolar substances DO NOT MIX! + = + = + =

4 Factors Affecting Solubility
Temperature As temperature INCREASES the solubility of SOLIDS in liquids INCREASES As temperature INCREASES the solubility of GASES in liquids DECREASES Temperature Increase Gas Solid

5 Factors Affecting Solubility
Pressure – ONLY AFFECTS GASES!! As Pressure INCREASES the solubility of GASES INCREASES AS Pressure DECREASES the solubility of GASES DECREASES Low Pressure High Pressure

7 Solubility Guidelines – Table F
Ions that are Always Soluble— Ions that are Sometimes Soluble— Ions that are Not Soluble—

8 Solubility Curves – Table G
Saturated – full of solute (on the line) Unsaturated – can hold more solute (below the line) Supersaturated – holds extra solute (above the line); the extra solute will precipitate out
