2 "Trifles" and Introduction to Mock Trial
On April 21, our class will hold a mock trial of Minnie Foster Wright. She will be on trial for the murder of her husband, John Wright, and may plead not guilty or not guilty by reason of insanity. Each student will choose a role as a character in the play, a witness, or a member of the prosecution or defense legal team. The students playing Mrs. Wright and her attorney(s) will decide on the plea. Susan Glaspell Link 1 Link 2 Link 3 2

3 We will work on the case for several days in class, and every student, no matter what role he or she will be playing on April 21, must work on either the defense or the prose-cution. (In other words, the lead attorneys are NOT doing all the work!) These two teams will discuss and decide what witnesses they would like to call and what questions they would like to ask. (See pages of your textbook for some questions to get you started.) Each team should have a plan for its case in the form of an outline. Every student (not just those playing the lead attorneys) must bring the written informal outline (handout) to class every day through April 21. Each legal team may call as many witnesses and ask as many questions as it likes but will have only about 30 minutes to present its case.
