1 Warm up 12/7/15 Where are the nonmetals found on the periodic table?
Left of the zigzag line Right of the zigzag line On the border of the zigzag line In the first three rows only Hydrogen is considered a _______________. Metal Metalloid Nonmetal

2 Periodic Groups - nonmetals

3 Groups 13-16 From Group 13 to Group 16, the elements shift from metals to nonmetals. These groups are given names based on the top element.

4 Groups 13-16 Group 13 – Boron Group Group 14 – Carbon Group
Group 15 – Nitrogen Group Group 16 – Oxygen Group The elements in these groups have varying properties.

5 Chlorine (gas), Bromine (liquid), and Iodine (solid)
halogens The elements in Group 17 are called halogens. Halogens are nonmetals and are very reactive. Chlorine (gas), Bromine (liquid), and Iodine (solid)

6 Noble Gases Group 18 is called the noble gases (or inert gases).
The noble gases are all nonmetals, and they are unreactive.

7 Hydrogen Although hydrogen is a nonmetal, it is located directly above Group 1 because the alkali metals and hydrogen both have one outer electron. The properties of hydrogen are unique (colorless, odorless gas that reacts explosively with oxygen), so it is not included in any periodic table group.

8 Review questions In which group are the unreactive nonmetals found?
How is hydrogen similar to sodium? How are they different? In the future, a new noble gas may be synthesized. Predict its atomic number and properties.

9 Warm up 11/18/14 Which group contains very reactive nonmetals?
Lanthanide series Noble gases Halogens Neon is part of the ________________. Oxygen group Nitrogen group
