2
Introduction: Effective assistance and care are necessary for people with breast cancer surgery after discharge from hospital.
3
Objectives: The present study aims to reveal actual condition and needs of people after breast cancer operation in order to construct a model for discharge support.
4
Methods: We conducted a mail survey to 130 associations of breast cancer patients from August 2016 to March 2017 after the approval of the ethics committee.
5
Results: Overall A total of 83 patients responded to the survey. The average age was 59 (SD =12, Max = 88, Min = 34). Seventy-one (86%) answered that they had received information of things to keep in mind from ward nurse staff after discharge when they were still in the hospital, while among the rest eight (10%) responded “no explanation” and four (5%) said “don’t remember.” The timing of the information assistance they received was; 8 (10%) from hospital admission to after-surgery, 35 (42%) until three days after the surgery, and 25 (30%) after announcement of the day of discharge.

Results: Open question
Answers to an open question include: needs for information such as “information on patients association and underclothes” or “explanation of scars,” uneasiness such as “not feeling at ease,” and manner of assistance such as “explaining in a wooden manner like reading a document.” Other answers concerned too much variation of the assistance contents among hospitals and regions and demanded to ask how to cope with life and cancer after discharge.
11
Conclusion: Although every discharging patient needs assistance care for leaving hospital, we found that some didn’t receive such service. After the surgery, all the patients must learn and practice self-care of lymphedema and infection prevention. We need further research to understand proper timing and manners to give information.
