Maintaining situational awareness
Initiating the launch
Flying the launch in a safe manner
Relaying in-flight signals to the observer
Aborting the launch if necessary
Always be thinking of emergency procedures.

3. AUTO TOW - OBSERVER Responsible for
Gathering information from the signaller and the glider
Relaying important information to the driver
Maintaining situational awareness
Hooking up the rope to the truck properly and securely
Always be thinking of emergency procedures

4. AUTO TOW - DRIVER Responsible for
Maintaining situational awareness
Driving the vehicle safely
Maintaining correct speeds
Acting on the information relayed by the observer
Always be thinking of emergency procedures

5. IMPORTANT
A person other than the pilot SHALL NOT abort the launch if they consider the pilot to be holding on too long, or they are ‘high enough’
Once the glider becomes airborne, the decision to abort rests with the pilot

6. *NOTE*
There may be situations in which someone other than the pilot must abort the launch. These should be seen as the exceptions to the rule, and will be discussed shortly.

7. SCENARIO 1
The pilot has given the all out and is now at approximately 250 feet. The auto-tow driver observes a civilian aircraft departing from an intersecting runway which the truck will soon cross.

8. SCENARIO 2
The pilot has given the ‘wings level’ signal, when a deer is observed running between the glider and the truck.

9. SECNARIO 3
The glider is about 20 feet in the air when someone notices a knot in the rope.

10. SCENARIO 4
Just as the pilot gives the ‘all out’ a famil cadet runs out onto the runway 20 feet in-front of the glider.

11. SCENARIO 5
As the glider passes the signaller, they notice that the rudder lock is still in place.
