4 Rwanda Colonialism: (1918) Originally Rwanda-Urandi was a former colony of Germany After WWI the Treaty of Versailles passed control of the area to Belgium

5 Rwanda 1926: Belgians introduce a system of ethnic identification to differentiate between the two traditional groups of people in Rwanda Both the Germans and the Belgians turned the traditional Hutu-Tutsi relationship into a class system The Minority Tutsi are favoured over the majority Hutu

6 Rwanda 1959: The Hutu rebel against the Belgian colonial power and push the Tutsi into Burundi

7 Rwanda Independence: The Hutu rebel against the Belgian colonial power and push the Tutsi into Burundi The Hutu install a new president while the Tutsi remain in power in Burundi Further massacre of the Tutsi by the Hutu

8 Rwanda April 6, 1994 President Habyarimana is killed when his plane is shot down. Hutu extremists believe that Tutsi are behind the act. That night the killing begins
