2 Page 1 BAS History 1943, secret WW2 mission, Operation Tabarin to secure Antarctic waters and strengthen British sovereignty claims 1944, set up ‘Base A’ at Port Lockroy, Goudier Island, performing daily weather and sea-ice observations, marine biology, geology and surveying 1945, named Falkland Island Dependencies Survey (FIDS). Four bases, increasing focus on science and discovery 1947, Signy base established , Norweigan-Swedish-British Antarctic Expedition , South Georgia Survey , FIDS Aerial Survey Expedition 1956, Halley Base established , International Geophysical Year (IGY)
