Urbanisation is one of the most powerful and visible anthropogenic forces on earth
50% of the world’s population live in urban areas; expected to increase to 66% by 2050
90% of urbanisation taking place in Africa and Asia

3. Background – Consequences of Urbanisation in Africa
Increasing formation of informal settlements
Increasing poverty and inequality
Environmental pollution
Inadequate or overstretched infrastructure
Increased solid waste generation

4. Purpose of Sustainable Urban Development WG
Promote the use of Earth observation data in decision making during urban development processes
Assessing available Earth observation data and tools that can support planning and management of urbanization in Africa
Promote sharing of data and methodologies for geo-visualizing geographic urban infrastructure, extracting key urban features; and detecting patterns and trends.

8. Expected Outcomes
Raise awareness on the activities of the AfriGEOSS Sustainable Urban Development thematic area;
Promote use of Earth observation in support of national and global policies on urban development; and
Provide overview of available EO data and tools on urban mapping and monitoring
