1 2 Corinthians Class Schedule
2/26/17 2 Cor 2:9-13 R. Henderson

2 9  For to this end also I wrote, so that I might put you to the test, whether you are obedient in all things. 10  But one whom you forgive anything, I forgive also; for indeed what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, I did it for your sakes in the presence of Christ, 11  so that no advantage would be taken of us by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his schemes. 12  Now when I came to Troas for the gospel of Christ and when a door was opened for me in the Lord, 13  I had no rest for my spirit, not finding Titus my brother; but taking my leave of them, I went on to Macedonia.

3 9  For to this end also I wrote, so that I might put you to the test, whether you are obedient in all things. for to this end also I wrote for with this end in view I wrote (Wuest) he (Paul) also says this in verse 3 so that – lit : with a purpose that I might put you to the test lit: that I may know (ginosko) the proof of you remember ginosko is “to be taking in knowledge” proof - dokimē - proof of genuineness, trustworthiness see - 2 Cor. 13:3, Phil. 2:22

4 whether you are obedient in all things
9  For to this end also I wrote, so that I might put you to the test, whether you are obedient in all things. whether you are obedient in all things you = Corinthians obedient - hypēkoos - giving ear, subject – akin to the Greek word “to listen under” see Acts 7:39, Phil 2:8 whether you are obedient and altogether agreeable [to following my orders] in everything (Amp) see 2 Cor 7:15 This action would also show that the church accepted Paul's apostolic authority. This was a test of its obedience to his authority Constable

5 but one whom you forgive anything,
10  But one whom you forgive anything, I forgive also; for indeed what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, I did it for your sakes in the presence of Christ, but one whom you forgive anything, now, to whom you forgive anything (Wuest) Who is being referred to here? I forgive also; - Paul also forgives “that one” for indeed what I have forgiven, for also that which I myself have forgiven (Wuest) forgiven here is in the perfect tense and is to bestow favor unconditionally (charis - grace)

6 if I have forgiven anything, If – assumed to be true
10  But one whom you forgive anything, I forgive also; for indeed what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, I did it for your sakes in the presence of Christ, if I have forgiven anything, If – assumed to be true forgiven - same word in the perfect tense I did it for your sakes in the presence of Christ your sakes – lit: because of you (the Corinthians) in the presence of Christ presence - prosōpon - lit., "the part towards the eyes" (from pros - towards, ops - the eye)- Acts 3:13, Acts 5:41, 2 Thess 1:9 What is the significance of doing it “in the presence of Christ”?

7 10  But one whom you forgive anything, I forgive also; for indeed what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, I did it for your sakes in the presence of Christ, for your sakes I have forgiven it in the presence of Christ (Wuest) Paul seems to be saying that his forgiveness of this man was done while in Christ’s presence We know the following: We are in Christ and Christ is in us Christ is our life We are seated with Christ in heavenly places

8 11  so that no advantage would be taken of us by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his schemes.
so that – with a purpose that no advantage would be taken of us by Satan lit: lest we should be outsmarted by Satan verb – we should be outsmarted - pleonekteō -"to seek to get more" (pleōn - more, echō - to have); hence, "to get an advantage of, to take advantage of see 2 Cor 7:2, 2 Cor 12:18 What is Satan’s relationship to the believer? see Hebrews 2:14

9 for we are not ignorant of his schemes
11  so that no advantage would be taken of us by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his schemes. for we are not ignorant of his schemes ignorant is the idea “to be ignorant” or “not to know” but this verse says we are not ignorant (present tense, continuous action) schemes - noēma – denotes thought, that which is thought out or mindset; translated "devices" in 2 Cor. 2:11; "minds" in 2 Cor. 3:14; 2 Cor. 4:4 What are Satan’s schemes (i.e. mindset)? The snare or trap of the devil – 1 Tim 3:7 Satan disguises himself as an angel of light – 2 Cor 11:14 You (Jewish religious leaders) are of your father the devil John 8:44 Your minds led astray by another Jesus - 2 Cor 11:3-4

10 Troas – a seaport near the city of Troy (NW of Ephesus)
12  Now when I came to Troas for the gospel of Christ and when a door was opened for me in the Lord, 13  I had no rest for my spirit, not finding Titus my brother; but taking my leave of them, I went on to Macedonia Troas – a seaport near the city of Troy (NW of Ephesus) a door was opened for me in the Lord The Lord is the One who places them (Rev 3:8) Pray for them (Col 4:2-3). Walk through them or even past them (1 Cor 16:8-9) I had no rest for my spirit, not finding Titus my brother Why is Paul not at rest about this matter? --- (it) appears to have been to help his readers appreciate his anxious concern for their welfare, which Titus was to report to him Constable
