3. 2 Corinthians is Paul’s 4th letter to them
Paul had left some indications in the two letters that we have that this letter is actually his 4th letter to them.
1 Corinthians 5:9
I wrote you in my letter…
2 Corinthians 7:8
For though I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it; though I did regret it--for I see that that letter caused you sorrow, though only for a while--

4. 2 Corinthians Overview*
Background:
Written approximately 1 year after the 1st letter.
2. Paul enumerated the problems in the church (1st letter); then there arose a wave of distrust in relation to Paul himself which swept throughout the church.
Their distrust:
a. Paul was not sincere
They questioned his authority:
who does Paul think he is to be judging us?
c. Their perception: Paul was in it for the money

Background (cont.):
So in this wonderful letter Paul details the following:
- what the life ministry of the Lord should look like
through us as vessels.
- how you recognize that the source of ministry is from the
life of the Lord Jesus and not out of self.
5. Paul is not at all defending his life & ministry but just simply explaining how he lives (by faith) and how God then uses him as a vessel in His ministry.
Theme:
The character of Christ’s life & ministry through a servant of God to fulfill His eternal purpose (declaring, sharing & revealing His glory).

apostle - lit., "one sent forth" - (apo, "from," stellō, "to send").

Paul is Jesus Christ’s apostle – in the strict sense (like the 12 were), he saw the risen Lord see Gal 1:17; 1 Cor 9:1
also Jesus personally revealed the gospel to Paul

The recipients of this epistle knew Timothy well (v19,Acts 18:5).
He had come to faith in Christ evidently through Paul's ministry in Lystra in Asia Minor - Acts14:8-20;1Tim 1:2; 2Tim 1:2
He had accompanied Paul on his journeys from the second missionary journey on (Acts 16:1-3)
and had gone to Corinth as the apostle's emissary (1 Cor. 4:17; 16:10) Constable

Even though it was "at Corinth" it was God's church. It did not belong to the Corinthians or their teachers.

Paul intended that the Corinthian Christians would read this epistle in the church, but he also wanted all the Christians in the province of Achaia to read it.
