1 Naming Covalent Compounds
NONMETAL TO NONMETAL

2 Naming Molecular Compounds
9.3 Naming Molecular Compounds

3 RULES TO FOLLOW Name the elements in the order listed in the formula.
9.3 RULES TO FOLLOW Name the elements in the order listed in the formula. Use prefixes to indicate the number of each kind of atom. Omit the prefix mono- when the formula contains only one atom of the first element in the name. The suffix of the name of the second element is -ide.

4 Write the formulas for the following compounds
Let’s Practice! Write the formulas for the following compounds Nitrogen monoxide Dinitrogen monoxide 3. Dinitrogen pentoxide

5 Let’s Practice Some More
Can you write the name from the formula? P2O O2Cl2 SF6

6 METAL to a NONMETAL Anytime you see a POLYATOMIC ION
9.2 Ionic Compounds METAL to a NONMETAL Anytime you see a POLYATOMIC ION

7 Ionic Compounds Rules to Follow Cation(the metal) written first
9.2 Ionic Compounds Rules to Follow Cation(the metal) written first Anion(the nonmetal) last (ending changed to –ide) If metal is a transition metal (or in a skipped column) it needs a roman numeral to tell everyone it’s charge! Do NOT include charges when writing final formula

8 Ionic Compounds MORE HELPFUL HINTS
9.2 Ionic Compounds MORE HELPFUL HINTS Use periodic table to determine charges Add subscripts as needed to balance the charges to ZERO If roman numeral needed- it is the CHARGE

9 PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
Write the formulas for each of the following Lithium oxide Calcium nitride Aluminum chloride Iron (II) oxide Cobalt (II) bromide

10 More Practice = More Perfect
Write the names of each of the following CaBr2 Al2O3 CsCl NiCl2 CuO

11 Compounds With Polyatomic Ions
9.2 Compounds With Polyatomic Ions Hints for POLYATOMICS Polyatomic ion – ion with multiple atoms with a charge Listed in periodic table Use ( ) for more than one polyatomic Charges must still balance to zero!

12 Compounds With Polyatomic Ions
9.2 Compounds With Polyatomic Ions Examples Calcium and nitrate Magnesium and hydroxide

13 Compounds With Polyatomic Ions
9.2 Compounds With Polyatomic Ions Oysters produce calcium carbonate to form their shells and sometimes pearls. Write the formula for calcium carbonate Some examples of ionic compounds containing polyatomic ions are shown. a) Oysters produce calcium carbonate to form their shells and sometimes pearls. b) Lead(II) sulfate is an important component of an automobile battery. c) Compounds such as ammonium sulfate or ammonium phosphate are common fertilizers.

14 Compounds With Polyatomic Ions
9.2 Compounds With Polyatomic Ions Lead(II)sulfate is an important component of an automobile battery. Write the formula. Some examples of ionic compounds containing polyatomic ions are shown. a) Oysters produce calcium carbonate to form their shells and sometimes pearls. b) Lead(II) sulfate is an important component of an automobile battery. c) Compounds such as ammonium sulfate or ammonium phosphate are common fertilizers.

15 Write the name of the following
More Practice! Write the name of the following NH4OH CaCO3 AlPO4 CuSO4 KNO2
