4 “Courage is about doing what you're afraid to do
“Courage is about doing what you're afraid to do. There can be no courage unless you're scared. ”- Eddie Rickenbacker. For most people, when it comes to a matter of survival, they are terrified of dying. However, in the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, three of the characters choose to die rather than stand for something they do not believe in. This is the definition of courage Rickenbacker talks about in his quote. In several different examples, the characters John Proctor, Rebecca Nurse and Martha Corey show how true courage shows when a person is faced with a life or death moment. Sample: Quotation

5 During World War II, a man named Raul Wallenberg put his life on the line to save over 100,000 Jews from the concentration camps. As part of his strategy, he would pretend to issue fake passports that would claim that Jewish people were actually Swiss citizens. He was constantly threatened with death or imprisonment, in fact, he ended up being captured for his “crimes”. Wallenberg is an example of the type of hero seen in The Crucible by Arthur Miller. In the play, John Proctor is an example of a Puritan Wallenberg, someone who does what he thinks is right no matter what. Sample: Anecdote

6 How many people have ever stopped themselves from doing something because they were scared? Most of the time, this is from simple fears like being scared of rollercoasters or being terrified of walking through an alley at night. However, sometimes, people are afraid because of what might do to themselves or their family. In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller Elizabeth Proctor, Mary Warren, and Abigail Williams let their fears negatively influence their actions towards what is right for the people of Salem. According to the website Statistic Brain, 80% of women admit to telling a lie that they consider a “harmless half-truth”. For most women, this could be comments about someone’s weight, how they look, or whether or not they feel up to going out. However, in the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, one character, Abigail Williams, believes at first that she is telling “harmless half truths”, but in the end her lies end up destroying an entire community.
