2 Our Healthy Year It’s crucial that children learn from an early age about healthy eating and the importance of activity in their lives so they can carry this information on with them beyond primary school As part of our Change4Life programme, we have created Our Healthy Year to support NCMP , particularly with Reception and Year 6 children, but also with the whole school to help them to eat well, move more and live longer As I am sure many of you know, each year 1.1 million children in reception and year 6 are weighed an measured as part of the National Child Measurement Programme. Measurement offers us an opportunity to develop the knowledge and behaviours of reception and year 6 children to prepare them to lead healthier lives. This initiative will therefore support and enhance the NCMP by providing timely and targeted Change4Life materials and messaging to stakeholders including parents, children, teachers, heads, local authorities and school nurses

3 Our Healthy Year Reception is a time when children are settling into school and forming new patterns, and parents are engaged and involved with school life Year 6 are particularly busy with stressful SATs reparation and experiencing the onset of puberty These are also the years when children’s height and weight is measured by school nurses as part of the NCMP Key times for children to engage with the important healthy lifestyle messages of Our Healthy Year As I am sure many of you know, each year 1.1 million children in reception and year 6 are weighed an measured as part of the National Child Measurement Programme. Measurement offers us an opportunity to develop the knowledge and behaviours of reception and year 6 children to prepare them to lead healthier lives. 4 Creating a positive environment around the NCMP
Headteachers Teachers Pupils School Nurses Local Authorities In school, the programme will be about creating a positive environment around measurement For head teachers supporting them to create a healthier culture within the schools with ideas for the whole school to get involved in as a backdrop to the measurement. For teachers this is curriculum linked teachable moments and creating visibility around the school with posters and wall charts For pupils this is take home certificates and stickers. These are likely to be linked to completing a related activity rather than the measurement itself Parents and Governors

5 Built On Insight Childhood obesity is not ‘their’ problem Overestimate activity, underestimate unhealthy eating Don’t perceive risk in some unhealthy behaviours Healthy living is seen as middle class Short term happiness is prioritized over long term health benefits As I am sure many of you know, each year 1.1 million children in reception and year 6 are weighed an measured as part of the National Child Measurement Programme.
