3 Background to Strategy Development Child obesity strategy and action plan in place since 2008 - cross sector steering group Commended by the Child Obesity National Support Team in 2009. Recognised need for a single overarching strategy to address obesity in children, families and adults. Child Obesity Steering Group has become the Healthy Weight Strategic Group (HWSG). HWSG has developed a first draft of HW strategy

4 Vision of Healthy Weight Strategy to enable Nottingham citizens and their families to experience the benefits of being a healthy weight; for Nottingham to be a place where healthy lifestyles are the normal way of life and where every adult and child is able and motivated to make positive choices regarding nutrition and physical activity

8 MISSION Healthy Weight for All AIM To increase the number and proportion of children and adults who are a healthy weight in Nottingham OUTCOMES - Reduction in CVD, cancer & premature mortality - Reduction in maternal & infant mortality - Improved mental well-being - Improved health & development of children contributing to better academic achievement - Reduction in health inequalities Child obesity will be reduced to 18%. Baseline 2006/07: 20% Reduce the proportion of overweight and obese adults to the 2000 average levels for England, 60%. Baseline 2007: 69% TARGETS Healthy Weight Strategy Save an estimated 2600 lives over the next 10 years (a 10% reduction in deaths) by achieving our 2020 healthy weight targets

Implementing Nutrition Standards for School Meals. Child measurement programme. Support delivery of 2 hrs high quality curriculum PE and additional 3 hrs sport Maximising impact of Healthy Children’s Centre standards on Healthy Weight Developing active leisure opportunities for children, families and adults. Developing frontline staff in skills on healthy eating and physical activity and healthy weight. Behaviour change Decade of Better Health campaign promoting Change4Life messages. Breastfeeding Peer Supporters for young mums. Expansion of Active Families to include Active Foster Families and session for families with children with disabilities. Fit for the Future – supporting inactive children through after school activities Healthy Community Centre Cafes Communities for Health Small Grants

18 SPECIALIST-new developments New Go4It site starts this month - Snienton Consultation with parents – inform commissioning of alternative service to Go4it! to give increased choice.

19 Challenges Raising the profile so healthy weight is seen as everybody’s business. Ensuring cross-sector workforce is equipped and skilled to raise the issue of weight in an effective and sensitive manner. Ensuring effective coordination and implementation of Physical Activity, PE and Sport Strategy for Children and Young People. Maintaining school engagement. Ensuring non-stigmatising interventions. Engaging and motivating families to adopt healthy lifestyles.
