ENCULTURATION The process of learning a culture by living in a family and growing up as a member of society.

CULTURE TRAITS A characteristic of a culture

CULTURAL DIFFUSION The spread of ideas from one place to others primarily through technology. Can be spread through migration and war.

ASSIMILATION The process in which the culture traits of newcomers become similar to those of the people in the new country. People who move to another country may give up their traditions.

ACCULTURATION The exchange of culture traits that results from long-term contact with another society

ETHNIC GROUP A cultural group of people who share beliefs and practices learned from relatives and ancestors

CULTURAL BORROWING The taking of culture traits from one culture for use in another Ex: Baseball is an American sport but it is played in other countries.

HUMAN SOCIETY An organized group of people identified by its customs, traditions, and way of life

CULTURAL DIVERSITY The mixture of different ethnic groups within the same country

Characteristics of Culture
A) Material Traits are things like clothing, buildings, artwork and written language. Nonmaterial Traits are things like customs, ceremonies, spoken language, and religion as well as types of greeting people. B) Traits that define a culture are religion, language and customs and ceremonies.

Cultures Change A) Cultural borrowing is when societies interact the take traits from one another. B) Cultural Borrowing affects culture in the world because only about 10% of a society’s traits are their own. C) The United States has borrowed the following: Pizza from Italy St. Patricks Day from Ireland Skiing from Europe Soccer from Europe

Cultures Spread There are 3 main factors that aid in the spreading of culture. 1) Communication Technology- Internet, TV 2) Migration 3) War

National Cultures 1) People within a country share their national unity through flags, anthems and celebrations 2) Culture traits such as a country’s flag, national anthem, and national holidays remind them of their country’s heritage.

Study Questions 1) Material traits are objects while nonmaterial traits are customs and practices. 2) Countries that are isolated by geography tend to have one cultural group. Examples: Japan, Inuits of Canada 3) Migration leads to assimilation and acculturation. 4) Through national symbols, anthems and by celebrating national holidays.
