Complete a close reading of the passage on the stool. Annotate the passage looking for clues for mood, tone, theme, figurative language, and character development.

3 Charting the Green Light
While the Green Light itself is a symbol, it symbolizes different things at different points of the novel Identify the crucial quotes that discuss the Green Light in The Great Gatsby Create a timeline of the light Chart on the timeline how the light changes over the course of the novel. Label each point as the chapter in which it is discussed. Under the points put one quote from where the light is discussed. Above the points, give a one sentence explanation of what the light represents at that point in the novel. After you finish your timeline, discuss why the Green Light is perhaps one of the most important and identifiable symbols from literature.

4 Symbols With your seat partner, come up with 5 symbols that are meaningful to the community/larger world around you. Briefly explain what the symbol means.

6 Class Debate We will hold a class debate over two of the largest and most prominent issues in the novel: Is money one of the most important factors in life? Do Daisy and Gatsby truly belong together? You will be split into four groups, and assigned to take a side on one of these topics. You will need to come up with a two minute argument for your side, and then provide textual evidence to back it up. Each side will get to present their argument, and then you will have the chance to ask questions or pose issues with their argument.
