1 Precipitation SOL: 2.6 The student will investigate and understand basic types, changes, and patterns of weather. Key concepts include a) identification of common storms and other weather phenomena; b) the uses and importance of measuring, recording, and interpreting weather data; and c) the uses and importance of tracking weather data over time.

3 Precipitation is: Precipitation is the amount of water that falls to the earth in the form of rain, snow, hail or sleet. The clouds get heavy and the water falls back to the earth. Painting by: Maria Zeldis

4 Rain! Rain forms in clouds and falls in the form of water droplets.
Some words to describe rain: shower, wet, rainfall, pour

5 Snow! Snow is formed in clouds.
Snow is water vapor frozen into ice crystals. Snow falls in light white flakes.

6 Sleet! Sleet is a form of precipitation that is halfway between rain and snow. Consists of ice pellets, or a thin coating of ice that forms on the ground when there is freezing rain.

7 Hail! Hail falls in balls or chunks. Hail is ice or hard snow.
