1. Year 11 Subject Selection Chemistry

2. Course Description
Year 11 Chemistry consists of Unit 1 Chemistry (taught in Semester 1) and Unit 2 Chemistry (taught in Semester 2). This course goes for one year. There is no ‘acceleration’ of year 10 students for this subject. Year 11 Chemistry covers atomic structure, chemical bonding, mole theory, solution chemistry, and organic chemistry. Safe laboratory practice and lab skills are emphasised. Students require a solid grasp of mathematics to cope with chemistry theory.

Work tasks include practical activities, chapter questions and classroom activities. Some examples of some of the activities include:
Practical on metallic properties
Practical on ionic chemical reactions
1000 word report on an area of chemistry
Modelling of organic molecules.

End of Semester Exam
The are four School Assessed Coursework (SAC) tasks for Unit 1. And for Unit 2 there are also 4 SACs.

4. Subject pathway….
Students who undertake this subject acquire solid preparation for studying VCE Unit ¾ Chemistry. Disciplines of Science covered in course include: Chemistry. Maths concepts such as scientific notation, significant figures, errors and algebra are also covered. VCE pathway: VCE Chemistry. It is compulsory that students who choose to undertake Unit ¾ VCE Chemistry should complete the Unit ½ (Year 11) Chemistry course.

5. Extra activities/costs?
There are no extra costs to students.
There are no excursions or camps with this subject.
There is a Chemistry Aid help class on a Thursday after school pm.
Students are expected to participate in all laboratory practical activities.
