7 Persuasive text structures
Prompt: Write an essay stating your position on whether Taco Bell or Taco Cabana is the superior fast food establishment. Thesis: Taco Cabana focuses on providing a superior customer experience.

8 Two Equal Reasons Thesis 1st Reason 2nd Reason Conclusion

9 2 Equal Reasons Taco Cabana is better because they have cleaner facilities. …explain… Taco Cabana also provides friendlier service.

10 Nestorian Intro/Thesis 2nd best reason (minor reason)
BEST REASON—ZINGER!

11 Nestorian Taco Cabana is a better restaurant because they have a wide selection of condiments. (MINOR REASON FIRST) Taco Cabana is a better option because their food is fresher and healthier. (MAJOR REASON LAST!)

12 Strawman (one reason) Intro Thesis Opposing Reason
SHUT IT DOWN!!! (with evidence) Your side

13 Strawman Some people may say that Taco Bell is better because their prices are more affordable. This is simply not true. Taco Bell’s prices may be lower, but their food is less filling and nutritious. With the amount of food the average customer purchases at Taco Bell, you could get an equally filling and far healthier meal from Taco Cabana! Taco Bell’s prices only fool customers into thinking they are getting a good deal.

14 Concession-to concede
Intro/Thesis Important Reason against your argument --do not refute…acknowledge and move on (proves you’re reasonable and people should listen to you) Argument—positive for your side

15 Concession Some people say that Taco Bell’s prices are more affordable. This statement cannot be argued. It is a fact. However, Taco Cabana is still the superior choice. Their menu items may be a little more expensive, but they still provide friendlier service, fresher ingredients, and a wider variety of toppings.

16 Model selecting structure

17 Drafting time Look over your thesis notes, your brainstorming, and your HELP chart and select ONE of the four text structures to write your essay in During drafting, I will be meeting with some of you to schedule tutorials If you finish drafting early, you may work on an EXTRA CREDIT opportunity for vocab (instructions on the front board)
