Dr. D. ZAGDSUREN PRESIDENT, MONGOLIAN NATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN, OCA INFORMATION AND STATISTICS COMMITTEE

2 Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al Sabah
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Please allow me to begin by saying congratulations. Congratulations to you all for the outstanding performances of your athletes during Rio Without you the NOCs we would not have been able to enjoy two weeks of such spectacular and history-defining competition. You all did a fantastic job in preparing your teams and that was reflected in the quality of competitions. We will remember the countless world records and Olympic records that were broken, the hundreds of unexpected results and the many more individual stories and moments which make the Games so special. We saw Kosovo and South Sudan make their Olympic debuts taking the total number of NOCs participating in Rio to a record breaking 205- reflecting the truly unifying power of sport. We saw athletes from Kosovo, Fiji and Jordan all win their first ever Olympic medals and Vietnam, Singapore, Puerto Rico, Bahrain, Ivory Coast and Tajikistan win their first ever Olympic Gold medals – inspiring millions of people in their home nations. Throughout the Games we saw examples of the Olympic spirit in its truest from and competitions conducted in the spirit of fair play, friendship and respect. With a number of new world-class venues and an improved transport infrastructure, the people of Rio will now be left with a lasting legacy. We look forward to welcoming you all to Doha and joining you in a collective celebration of Olympism. Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al Sabah

3 KEY FINDINGS Total 87 countries won at least one medal at the Rio Games and 59 of them won gold medal. Although Asian nations won one more gold medals than 4 years ago at London, it is still short of Beijing and Athens Games. Total of 68 gold medals accumulated 22.15% of available gold medals at the Rio Games. For Europe, Rio 2016 was the best games in terms of medal quality since Athens with 113 gold medals. Number of medals won by European athletes is also increasing since Beijing 2008. America showed the historical performance on their own country with 210 total medals and 76 gold medals as both of them are records. They passed the threshold of 200 for the first time and number of gold medal is increasing by 20 in compare to London 2012. For African countries, in terms of medal number, it was the best performance of the history with 45 medals. It passed the previous record of 40 medals in Beijing 2008 by 5 medals. But in terms of gold medals or quality, they only secured 10 gold medals, decreasing figure in last two consecutive Games. For the Oceania countries, it is rather disappointing Games both in terms of medal quality and quantity. As the number of gold medals won by Oceania is decreasing since Athens 2004 and number of total medals is diminishing since Beijing 2008. Europe is leading continent in total 22 disciplines, which won more than 30% of medals or at least more than one gold medal while Asia is in 10, America is in 7 disciplines and Oceania is in one discipline, rugby sevens.

4 KEY FINDINGS In terms of medals, 38 percent of available medal goes to European female athletes. Asia and American athletes secured almost the same as 26% and 25% respectively. In contrast, Oceania and African athletes combined total of 11 percent of medals. Asian, American and African women athletes showed its best performance in the history of the Games in terms of number of medals and medal quality. More women competed in the Olympics in 2016 than in any other year in history. There were some 4,700 women competitors of 10,444 total athletes — a 6.8 percent increase since 2000 Of the competitions that took place at the Olympics, 47.5 percent of them will be with female competitors — another record for the games. We found that there is certain effect on performance by where it hosted. We can say that this “host continent effect” is only shown in data of Oceania, Asia and America later Olympics from 1996 to And it seems as this effect does not have any impact in European countries. It can be noticeable that host country reached the best performance in terms of medal quality at their own soil if you compare it with the previous two and next two Games.

58 Women representation More women competed in the Olympics in Rio 2016 than in any other year in history. When women were first permitted to enter the Olympic Games in Paris 1900, they represented just 22 of 997 of the athletic competitors. While women still face an uphill battle in achieving equal gender representation at the Olympics, things have dramatically improved in recent years. In Rio, 45 percent of all competitors were women. That’s more than double the figure from Montreal 1976, just 40 years ago. There were some 4,700 women competitors of 10,444 total athletes — a 6.8 percent increase since Sydney 2000. * Paris London * Paris Berlin Antwerp * Rio London Helsinki Rome Tokyo Mexico Munich Seoul Saint Louis Stockholm Melbourne Montreal Moscow Atlanta Sydney Athens Beijing London Amsterdam Los Angeles Los Angeles Barcelona

59 WOMEN EVENTS In Paris 1900, women had only five sports to compete in: tennis, sailing, croquet, equestrian, and golf — while men had 19. Of the competitions that took place at the Olympics, 47.5 percent of them will be with female competitors — another record for the games. Rio 2016 featured a record-setting 28 women’s sports, including this year’s new addition of rugby, and the reintroduction of women’s golf. 60 Host country effect at the Games
Source: NBC

61 HOST CONTINENT EFFECT From Seoul 1988 to Rio 2016, there were number of changes in the world of Olympics. In Seoul 1988 and before top countries in the Olympics were mostly European or American. But now in Rio 2016, countries in Asia had also become strong competitors in the Olympic stands. In 1988 Seoul Olympics, European countries won 59 percent of all medals, and Asian countries only won 13 percent. But in 2016 Rio, that number changed, Europe fell to 41 percent, and Asia rose to 25 percent. In this analysis we wanted to see if countries win more medals if “The Olympics” is hosted in their home continent or “host continent effect”. To accurately calculate this we need remove other variables effecting medal numbers. Simplest way doing this is to calculate the average of medals won in a given Olympics event using linear regression, and removing that percent from the actual value.

62 HOST CONTINENT EFFECT

63 HOST CONTINENTAL DIFFERENCE
We can say that this “host continent effect” is only shown in later Olympics from 1996 to And it seems as this effect does not have any impact in European countries. But in general, everyone gets a little competitive when they play at home. HOST CONTINENTAL DIFFERENCE

64 HOST COUNTRY IMPACT We have made some research on the host country’s performance. It can be noticeable that host country reached the best performance in terms of medal quality at their own soil if you compare it with the previous two and next two Games. P.S: 0 represents the Games that country hosted -2, -1 represents the previous two Games 1, 2 represents the next two Games
