Victoria By: Kristina Marie Scerri and Nicole Attard 2TL Nicole and I have worked on this PowerPoint. I’m going to talk about my town Victoria whereas Nicole about her village Gh’Siele.

2 About Victoria Known also as Rabat or by its formal title Città Victoria. Victoria was given in 1887 by Queen Victoria. Is the capital city of Gozo. Has a total population of 6,901. By population, it is the largest locality in Gozo. Victoria is also known as Rabat. The name Victoria was given to this town in 1887 by Queen Victoria. Victoria is the capital city of Gozo. The town has a total population of 6,901. By population, it is the largest locality in Gozo. In this picture we can see the view of Victoria from the Citadel taken by me last Sunday.

3 Many Gozitans often refer to Victoria by the name Rabat.
Usually known as Ir-Rabat Għawdex to distinguish it from the town of Rabat in Malta. Victoria is referred to by many Gozitans as Rabat. It is usually known as ir-Rabat Għawdes to distinguish it from the town of Rabat on the main island of Malta.

4 The Citadel Lies in the heart of Victoria, there is what was formerly known as il Castello. The Cathedral which is dedicated to Our Lady of Assumption was designed by Lorenzo Gafa’. It is most famous for the remarkable trompe l'oeil painting on its ceiling. In the heart of Victoria, one can find the Citadel which was formerly known as il Castello. The Cathedral is dedicated to Our Lady of Assumption. It was desinged by Lorenzo Gafa’ who was a Maltese architect who also built the Cathedral of Mdina. The Cathedral is famous for the remarkable trompe l’oeil painting on its ceiling. This depicts the interior of a dome that was never built. In these 2 pictures we can see the Cathedral from the inside and outside. These pictures where taken by me last Sunday.

5 Two main Parishes There are two main parishes, one dedicated to St. George and the other one dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The feast dedicated to St. Mary is celebrated on the 15 of August. St. George’s is celebrated on the third Sunday of July. In victoria there are two main parishes. One is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary which is devoted at the Gozo Cathedral and is celebrated on the 15 of August. The other main parish is dedicagted to St. George’s which is celebrated on the thrid Sunday of July,

6 Villa Rundle Gardens Are situated on Republic Street.
Has some monuments including: the Gozitan 18th century historian and grammarian Can. Giovanni Pietro Francesco Agius de Soldanis. and another one of Gozo born French poet and writer Laurent Ropa. The Villa Rundle Gardens are situated on Republic Street which is the main street in Victoria. In the Villa Rundle Gardens one can find some monuments including that of Can. Giovanni Pietro Francesco Agius de Soldanis which was a Gozitan 18th century historian. One can also find a monument of Laurent Ropa which was one of Gozo born French poet and writer.

7 What to find more in Victoria
The Gozo General Hospital. The Ministry for Gozo. The Boys and Girls Secondary Schools, the Sacred Heart Seminary, the Bishop Conservatory Schools Sir M.A. Refalo, Post Secondary School . Many restaurants, bars and shops. In Victoria, one can also finds the Gozo General Hospital which caters for the health needs of the inhabitants and visitors on the island of Gozo; the Ministry for Gozo, the Boys’ and Girls’ Secondary Schools as well as the Sacred Heart Seminary and the Bishop of Gozo School. In Victoria, there is also Sir Mikiel Anton Refalo, Post Secondary School which is usually known as the Sixth Form. The Ministry of Gozo which is situated in St. Francis Square. is situated in St. Francis Square. Sir M.A. Refalo Post Secondary School or as is commonly known the Sixth Form offers a variety of options to students who want to further their education at post secondary level.

8 Għajnsielem I am going to talk about the village I live in….which is Għajnsielem.

9 Description about Għajnsielem
Għajnsielem means:- “Għajn” (spring of) and “is-sliem” (peace). Is situated in the small island of Gozo. Has a population of around 3,000 people. It’s meaning is spring of peace. It is a small village in Gozo. Population of 3 thousand people.

10 Għajnsielem First Gozitan village that will greet you as soon as you leave Mgarr Harbour. One will also find the Lourdes chapel and Fort Chambray. You can discover views of Gozo`s southern cliffs, ix- Xatt l-Aħmar Bay and those of the Northern Comino Channel. It is the first village that greets you, when you leave the Mgarr Harbour. In the beginning of Għajnsielem, you can find Fort Chambray and the Lourdes Chapel. From this area you could see the view of Comino.

11 Feast Parish church, dedicated to our Lady of Loreto.
The people of Għajnsielem sense a pride of joy when celebrating their local feast. Fireworks are accompanied by the “viva x-xemx” anthym. The parish church is found in the centre of the village. It is dedicated to our Lady of Loreto.

12 What, one can find: A local Band club.
The Għajnsielem band is St. Joseph`s Band. Old church and the mysterious “pjazza tad- Dehra”. It is believed that our Lady has spoken to a local shepherd Anġlu Grech. Għajnsielem has a local band club. The band of this village is called St Joseph’s band. There also is an old church nearby. It is said that a shepherd named Anġlu Grech had seen Our Lady. He had built the church because of this vision. Today it is known as il-pjazza tad-dehra.

13 Activities Various activities are held in Għajnsielem:
The nativity village, which is most popular among many people during the Christmas festivities. The Holy week, this activity consists of Jesus’s entry into Jerusalem. Għajnsielem has a football team, known as blacks. Through out the year, the local council organises various activities….such as the nativity village, the holy week and summer activities in the square. The football team is known as the blacks.

14 Places found in Għajnsielem
Many restaurants in the village and also a Hotel “Grand Hotel”. Two pharmacies, a stationery and even supermarkets. MCAST Gozo campus is also found in Għajnsielem. Is an ideal village and I am proud of it. There are many restaurants. There are many shops. The MCAST is also found in the village I live in. Here one can learn and train for many opportunities. I am proud of my village and I am grateful that I am part of it.
