The German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge
(German: Abzeichen für Leistungen im Truppendienst) is a military decoration of the Bundeswehr, the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Germany. The decoration can be awarded to all German Soldiers. Allied Soldiers may also be awarded the badge. Any rank may be awarded and wear the badge. For the United States military, the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge is one of the few approved foreign awards, and it is one of the most sought after awards to achieve.
4
Who can participate? Any soldier from your unit! Soldiers WILL NOT participate: - if they are flagged (for any reason) or barred from reenlistment, - if they are in the military less than six months.

BFT = 11 x 10 meter sprint test Finish Line after Sprint 11
2 4 Event The testee starts from a prone position (head showing in the direction of the run) and negotiates, as fast as possible, a cone positioned 10 (ten) meters away. As soon as testee gets back to the start point, he briefly assumes a prone position, claps his hands behind his back, jumps up onto his feet and sprints again. The aim is to run five and a half laps in the fastest time possible. Test description At the beginning of the test, testee will be in a prone position, lying on a gym mat (Figure 1). Testee's arms are extended, arms lying parallel to his upper body. His legs are likewise extended and touch the mat. Upon the command "READY -- GO"; he will get up as fast as possible and starts running in a straight line from the mat (through the corridor formed by marker cones; see Figure 2), sprinting as fast as possible to the turning cone, negotiates the turning cone and, after also having negotiated one of the marker cones on the sideline, runs back to the mat. Having reached the mat, testee again assumes the prone position, claps his hands behind his back and immediately goes for the next dash. Figure 1 Testee's position at the beginning of the sprint test. The lower edge of the first gym mat touches the baseboard of the wall of the gym. The marker cones are positioned at the left-hand and right-hand corner of the upper edge of the second mat. Test sequence As described above, the testee must complete five and a half laps, that means that testee gets up six (6) times from the mat, sprints and negotiates the cone and assumes again the prone position. After having gotten up for the sixth time, he runs to the turning cone without negotiating it and without running back. Once the testee has reached the turning cone, the sprint will be timed and time will be recorded in seconds and tenths of a second under. Figure 2 Sprinter's path after having risen from a prone position and while negotiating the turning cone. Possible mistakes Sprinter jumps into push-up position (both feet clearly leave the floor); Incorrect prone position between sprints; sprinter does not clap hands behind his back; Sprinter cuts corners before negotiating the turning cone; Sprinter incorrectly exits the mat; sprinter fails to run between the two marker cones at the upper edge of the second mat and thus gets outside the prescribed corridor; Sprinter incorrectly approaches the mat on his way back; he fails to laterally negotiate one of the marker cones. If tester becomes aware of a testee's mistake, tester will ask testee to correct the mistake or insist on the correct completion of the upcoming lap. The test, however, will NOT stop. The test will be aborted, if testee does not immediately correct his mistake after having been asked to do so by the tester. Subsequently, the mistake will be explained to the testee and the test may be repeated as determined by the tester. 3 Finish Line after Sprint 11

BFT = 11 x 10 meter sprint test
General items required - Stopwatch - Two (2) gym mats - Three (3) cones - Measuring tape Note Before administering the test, make sure that all testees have enough time to warm up (running at a slower pace, stretching, etc.). To avoid injuries, the sprint corridor must be wide enough and behind the turning cone there must be a run-out area. Test area layout Two (2) gym mats will be placed flat on the floor of the gym; one mat abutting the other one. The lower narrow side of gym mat # 1 touches the baseboard of the gym's wall and the upper narrow side of gym mat # 1 touches the lower narrow side of gym mat # 2. Thus neither mat # 1 nor mat # 2 will slip when the sprinter gets up and the sprinter will have enough run-out space. Measured from the upper edge of mat # 2, a cone will be positioned 10 meters away and aligned with the center of mat's # 2 upper edge. This cone marks the turning point for each sprint lap and the finish line of the sprint test (Figure 3). Two (2) more cones -- the marker cones -- will be placed next to the left and right outer upper edge of gym mat # 2. The position of the marker cones centrally aligns with the outer upper edges of gym mat # 2. General items required - Stopwatch - Two (2) gym mats - Three (3) cones - Measuring tape Note Before administering the test, make sure that all testees have enough time to warm up (running at a slower pace, stretching, etc.). Chin-up test (flexed-arm hang)
Start Position Chin-up test Finish Position Test description To get into the starting position, testee will be standing on a squat box. He grips the bar in front of him, using a supinated or underhand grip (palms facing in towards you). In so doing, hands are placed about shoulder-width apart. In the starting position, testee's shoulders will be at approximately the same height as the bar. Forearms are flexed as far as possible towards the upper arms (Figure 4). When asked to do so by the tester, testee starts performing. Without being assisted by the squat box (testee steps off the squat box), testee will hold himself up with his chin above the bar (chin-up end position; elbow joints flexed to the maximum, shoulders at the height of the bar). Test sequence Before testee assumes the starting position, tester will check for correctness of gripping technique and ensure correct distance between hands. Tester will make corrections if necessary. Once testee's feet step off the squat box, timekeeping will start. Once the testee's chin is below the bar, timekeeping will stop (Figure 5). Testee's time will be recorded in seconds and tenths of a second under Point 2 of the scorecard. Possible mistakes - Wrong starting position - Chin rests on the bar If tester becomes aware of a testee's mistake, tester will ask testee to correct the mistake. The test, however, will NOT stop. The test will be aborted, if testee does not immediately correct his mistake after having been asked to do so by the tester. Subsequently, the mistake will be explained to the testee and the test may be repeated as determined by the tester. Event - The testee holds himself in the end position of a pull-up as long as possible. - Testee's evaluation will be based on the length of the time he can hold himself in this position. - Testee steps off the squat box and the instructor pulls it back, testee will hold himself up with his chin above the bar (chin-up end position; elbow joints flexed to the maximum, shoulders at the height of the bar). - Once testee's feet step off the squat box, timekeeping will start. Once the testee's chin is below the bar, timekeeping will stop. Testee's time will be recorded in seconds and tenths of a second.
12
Chin-up test (flexed-arm hang)
General items required - Stopwatch - Bar If more than one bar is available, all of them can be used allowing adjustments to individual body heights (height of bars at 180 cm or 190 cm); If no chin-up bar is available, any other suitable suspension system may be used. - Two (2) gym mats - Squat box, small - Magnesia or chalk, paper towels Note Before administering the test, make sure that all testees have enough time to warm up (running at a slow pace, stretching, etc.). In order to provide optimum grip, testees should use magnesia or chalk on their hands, and a paper towel should be used to wipe the bar dry between the single tests. Test area layout The bar will be adjusted to a fixed height of 185 cm. A squat box will be placed on a gym mat in front of the bar, making it possible for every testee to immediately assume the above described starting position in a standardized fashion. Adjustments in height, however, can be made for small or tall persons. Once testee has assumed the starting position and the test begins, an assistant will remove the squat box.

Scoring after having met all single-event pass requirements
How to tally score points Single-event results (individual test times) are translated into a graduated point-score system. Testees who meet the minimum pass requirements (100 points respectively) are awarded basic points [per event]. The better the testees performance, the more points are awarded for the respective events. For the event-specific basic point scores see the respective score table (11 x 10-meter sprint test, flexed-arm hang, 1000-meter run). Providing "handicaps" Equal chances Based on age-grading and physical-ability considerations, a "handicap" is provided to soldiers, taking into account age and/or gender. Age grading Testees who are 35 years old or younger will not be age-graded. Those who are 36 years old or older will be age-graded. Basic score points will be increased by 0.5 percent per year of age. The age-grading "handicap" is calculated based on the actual age reached by a testee in a given year. Age-graded "handicap" (36 years or older) = basic score points X (actual age minus 35 years) X 0.005 3.2 Scoring after having met all single-event pass requirements 3.2.1 Basic score points How to tally score points Single-event results (individual test times) are translated into a graduated point-score system. Age grading Testees who are 35 years old or younger will not be age-graded. Those who are 36 years old or older will be age-graded. Basic score points will be increased by 0.5 percent per year of age21. As shown in the following age-grading formula, the age-grading "handicap" is calculated based on the actual age reached by a testee in a given year. Age-graded "handicap" (36 years or older) = basic score points X (actual age minus 35 years) X 0.005

Scoring after having met all single-event pass requirements
Gender grading BFT scores have been normalized to take into account the physical abilities of male soldiers. Therefore male soldiers will not be provided any other type of "handicap" [besides age grading]. Each female (F) soldier will be provided an event-related "handicap". The "handicap" is - 15 percent for the sprint test (F) = basic score points X 0.15) 40 percent for the flexed-arm hang (chin-up) (F) = basic score points X 0.4) 15 percent for the 1000-meter run (F) = basic score points X 0.15) Single-event score You earn scores for each event plus, if applicable, age-graded and gender-graded points. - Event-score points = basic score points + age-graded points + gender-graded points Points Rating 100 – 199 Fair ( range) 200 – 299 Satisfactory ( range) 300 – 399 Good ( range) ≥ 400 Very Good ( range) Overall rating The BFT overall rating is the averaged value calculated from the single ratings. To provide better accuracy, calculate up to two (2) decimal points.

Overall rating The BFT overall rating is the averaged value calculated from the single ratings. To provide better accuracy, calculate up to two (2) decimal points. Example: sprint test / Event-score points = basic score points + age-graded points + gender-graded points = 405 flexed-arm hang test / Event-score points = basic score points + age-graded points + gender-graded points = 500 1000-meter run / Event-score points = basic score points + age-graded points + gender-graded points = 300 Total = 1205 Averaged value from the 3 single ratings: = 1205 : 3 = = GOLD Points Rating 200 – 299 Satisfactory BRONZE 300 – 399 Good SILVER >400Very Good GOLD 100 – 199 Fair
