2 STUFF TO KNOW BEFORE WATCHING TOUCH OF EVIL
*Film noir is a "mode" of filmmaking--a visual style, a mood, a thematic tone—that can be applied to a wide range of films: “Low key” lighting (dark shadows) Extreme camera angles Pessimistic world view/ hopelessness Characters are often morally ambiguous (neither good nor bad) Violence (had to be implied due to PCA) Distrust/mistreatment of women Touch of Evil (1958) is considered to be the “last” film noir* ever made in the classical Hollywood era It was Orson Welles' fifth Hollywood film & his last American film because… Welles clashed with Universal over the final cut & the studio re- edited the film & added new footage for its release Touch of Evil was demoted from A picture to B picture Welles plays the antagonist, Hank Quinlan, with make up & padding (he also wrote the screenplay) Charlton Heston, who is a white American, was cast to play a Mexican detective, Miguel Vargas (yes, this is both weird and offensive) Susan Vargas is played by Janet Leigh, later star of Psycho Tanya, who has a few scenes in the film, is played by the famous star, Marlene Dietrich, who was then in her late 50s  Other cameos include: Zsa Zsa Gabor and Mercedes McCambridge (who is in drag as a juvenile delinquent) LOOK FOR! 3-min. long take that opens the film (it is CRAZY) How long takes are used throughout Overlapping dialogue (what do you pay attention to, whose story do you follow?)
