3.5 billion years ago, life as we know it begins on Earth in our oceans
These were single celled organisms that didn’t need oxygen (because there was no oxygen anywhere on Earth)!
Photosynthetic life began two billion years ago: organisms used light from the sun to get energy
These organisms began to produce oxygen which filled the atmosphere
580 million years ago, the first multicellular life forms appeared in the oceans

3. Life Explodes
Fish, coral, shellfish, and ocean plants appear 485 million years ago
Fungi and plants appear on land 460 million years ago
443 million years ago: amphibians appear on land
310 million years ago: mammals, birds, and lizards begin to evolve

4. Pangaea: All of Earth
All the continents merged into one supercontinent 300 million years ago.
Earth was covered by a super- ocean called Panthalassa
Pangaea broke apart 200 million years ago into 2 continents:
Laurasia in the north
Gondwana in the south

5. Toward an Earth We Know
Laurasia broke apart forming North America, Europe, Asia, and the Atlantic
Gondwana broke into Africa, South America, Antarctica, and Australia

Blocked out the sun for at least 2 years
Created 110 mile wide crater
50-90% of all species alive on Earth at the time went extinct
Allowed mammals to become the dominant species on the planet
