 Create a Chapter 3 Title Page in your notebook.  Goals: What happens when atoms interact with other atoms? How does chemical bonding explain properties of different compounds? How does bonding within molecules affect interactions between molecules? How can different models of microscopic behavior help explain the macroscopic behavior of compounds?

 Create a new title/thread “What’s Shocking?”.  Update your Table of Contents with the correct page number.  Learning Target: I can recall what I know about the electrical nature of matter by predicting what will happen with a conductivity tester in different solutions.

 Read Introduction p. 102  P&P 1: Sketch each beaker, and label it with the name of the substance, and the chemical formula.  P&P#2: Predict which substances will conduct electricity.  Sketch the conductivity meter in your notebook with a brief explanation of how it works.

 P&P#5: Make a list of as many conductors and insulators as you can think of. Conductor: a material in which heat, electrical charge, or both can flow readily. Insulator: a material that is a poor conductor of heat, electrical charge, or both.  P&P#7: Record your observations as we use the conductivity meter in each of the solutions.  What do you think causes some substances to conduct electricity, while others do not?.

 What do you know about Vandegraaff generators?  Let’s see what happens when we put different things on the Vandegraaff generator...  Let’s take a closer look at how the generator works http://www.virlab.virginia.edu/VL/VDG.htm /state/4 http://www.virlab.virginia.edu/VL/VDG.htm /state/4

 Mythbusters build a Vandegraaff generator Mythbusters  Reflect & Connect #1-4 p. 104

 Solid Sodium Chloride - Conductor, or Not??? Solid Sodium Chloride - Conductor, or Not???
