Glass of Water A young lady confidently walked around the room while leading and explaining stress management to an audience; with a raised glass of water, and everyone knew she was going to ask the ultimate question, 'half empty or half full?'..... she fooled them all..."How heavy is this glass of water?", she inquired with a smile. Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. to 20 oz. She replied, "The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance. In each case it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes." She continued, "and that's the way it is with stress. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won't be able to carry on." "As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden - holding stress longer and better each time practiced. So, as early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens down. Don't carry them through the evening and into the night.... pick them up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you're carrying now, put them down for a moment. Relax, pick them up later after you've rested. Life is short. Enjoy it and the now 'supposed' stress that you've conquered!"

GRATITUDE Thankful Simplicity Being thankful gives our lives meaning
When we shift attention away from ourselves to others, we change our biology Studies show that people involved in “giving behaviors” produce chemicals in their bodies that result in greater tranquility, joy, and trust- even a measurable diminishing of chronic aches and pains Giving can happen - when we have gratitude As you leave lab today, write one thing you are thankful for on the bulletin board.

Acts of Kindness Hidden Love Letters to Strangers Drive By Post Its
Write an encouraging note and place it in a place where a stranger will find it. Drive By Post Its Take 5 minutes to encourage a colleague, janitor, secretary, administrator, or the lunch ladies. Have students write an encouraging note on a post-it note. Take a short five minutes to do a silent drive by. Walk quickly to that person’s door and stick all the post-it notes on it. It’s very important that the students know it is silent. Don’t disturb anyone, but especially for secretaries or colleagues, this is a great encouragement for them. Drive By Encouragement Put a long 1-2 foot strip of masking tape on student desks. The students write compliments on the masking tape for their fellow students. Make them start with their own table or row (so everyone makes sure to get one). Then after all the compliments are written, they “drive by” and stick the pieces of masking tape on each student. Students end up with encouragements. Most students keep the tape on their binders or folders and are very encouraged by these notes.
