1 Transforming Learning Spaces
Patricia Baker

2 Goal To discuss and share different ideas of creating or transforming spaces in a school Opportunities to share and discuss individual needs and ideas Opportunities to ask questions for further clarification

3 Role of the Space What is your space?
Classroom, Library, Learning Commons, Teaching pod What is the purpose of your space? Do you need a variety of zones for different purposes? Small Group work, Large group area, Private/Quiet individual zone “Reconfiguring the physical relationship is a powerful signal that participation is truly welcome. The result is that you get better ideas out in the open where they can grow” David Kelley - Make space: how to set the stage for creative collaboration

4 Designing the Space How to define the space Furniture Netting
Collaborative Group Space Personal space

5 Designing the Space l How to define the space Other Material Shelving

6 Make a small specific area pop with a bright colour
Designing the Space How to define the space Colour & Signage Make a small specific area pop with a bright colour Use signage that is specific, short and fun Remember to keep the area tidy, clean and free of clutter

7 Flexible Space Put Shelving, cupboards, carts on wheels
Use folding tables and benches that can easily be put away to suit the environment you need Cushions or foam blocks can be put in many different configurations for large or small groups Be flexible in where and how your students work to make their space be the best for their learning needs

8 Using existing structure
Use walls as whiteboards for students to write ideas and solve problems Install genius bar for technology or for students to stand to do work

9 Using existing structure
vGlass doors or walls Use window writing markers to write on Make a Graffiti wall thought/prayer wall Desks or tabletops - paint with whiteboard paint

10 Transition space When designing a learning space, leave room for students to transition from one area to another. Too much clutter or too little walking space decreases opportunities for a student to expand on ideas. The space feels closed in and therefore the students also feel closed in or hampered in their ability to expand and explore their work..

11 Accessorizing the space
Setting the ambience What is the feeling you wish to set for the room Calm (neutral colours with natural materials) Invigorating, inspiring (bright, bold colous) Welcoming (a touch of both) Lighting Can give a warm glow for a comforting & welcoming feeling (small lamps) Carpet Can give that homey, living room feeling

12 Evaluating the Space Transforming a space is ongoing project. Needs change and so should the space. Never assume that a space has been completed but always look for new ways to engage students with a new layout and purpose.

13 Evaluating the Space Transforming a space is ongoing project. Needs change and so should the space. Reading Area Restorative zone Material draped over the ceiling of each of the four colours to represent the four directions. N S E W. Cushions to sit in a circle so participants all have equal importance and representation.

14 Review & Questions What is the purpose of your space?
Do you need different areas for different purposes? How do you want the space to feel? Do you need a committee to make decisions? Can the students be involved in the decisions? “Space is a valuable tool that can help you create deep and meaningful collaborations in your work and life.” David Kelley Make space: how to set the stage for creative collaboration
