Linking the film to collective identity

British new wave cinema (bnwc) is film mostly produced in the 50s/60s; there are multiple versions of bnwc in modern times however these can fall under the category of cinema realism. Within the 2000s cinema realism was a popular style of film with more independent film producers. The style of cinema realism is a lot more cost effective as filming can take place within everyday life therefore there is reduced set costs.

This is England One of my favourite British films is ‘This is England’; a 2006 independent film based on 1983 skinheads and the development of a small friendship group who all live in Nottingham. Both Saturday night, Sunday Morning and This is Britain have a predominant focus on British youths and their lives. Both depicting youth rebellion and northern life in deprived areas means they have many shared characteristics. If I were to compare the two I would focus on the depiction of youths; their actions in relation to drinking, attitudes towards elders and attitudes towards sexual liberation.

How has bnwc influenced modern films?
As with any film style and movement the features of bnwc can be pin pointed and used to inspire more modern films. Characteristics of British New Wave films; black-and-white spontenanious realistic method of filming pseudo-documentary Pseudo-documentary and realistic filming can be see in This is England in many different films. Especially in the haircut scene where Lol gives Shaun a haircut. Most of this scene was unscripted and was left mostly uncut with only a couple of different shots.

Movie Posters Comparing Saturday night, Sunday morning and This is England focusing on the film itself shows many similarities however the movie posters of each suggest otherwise.

The movie poster for Saturday night, Sunday morning (SNSM) is contrasting with This is England’s poster due to many different factors. SNSM uses two very different vibrant colours this shows the contrast between the characters in the film also supported by the two affairs pictured on the poster, both being carried out by Arthur. The protagonist in the centre of the poster, is portrayed perhaps as a higher class citizen due to his suit and expensive clothing, however by him being stood in a ‘fighting’ stance perhaps shows his roots of a working class family.

In comparison the poster for ‘This Is England’ (TIS) which shows the grittiness of the Northern parts of England in the early 1980’s. The characters pictured are all wearing similar costumes to represent their unity and solidarity as a movement. They all depict the typical Northern Working class citizens by wearing Doc. Martins, smart shirts and tight jeans, along with their shaved skin heads which perhaps can also be contextually seen along side the northern mine workers.
