1 Airspace Change Summary
Airport Consultative Committee 21st September 2017

2 LBA Airspace Change – Drivers for Change
Controlled Airspace : What is it? “The invisible structure of protected airways and flight paths commercial aircraft follow when flying through the UK, otherwise know as Class D Airspace” The current airspace system and ground based navigation aids have been in use for over 40 years and are becoming obsolete. Air traffic set to reach 3.1m aircraft carrying 350 million passengers by 2030. Government looking to modernising UK airspace via its ‘UK Future Airspace Strategy’ consultation (FAS). LBA is undertaking its own airspace change which will address the governments FAS aims through the introduction of better air traffic management systems. These include; Greater use of continuous ascent and descent operations Standard Terminal Arrival Routes (STAR’s) Standard Instrument Departures (SID’s)

3 LBA Airspace Change - Proposals

4 Controlled Ascents & Descents
Benefits Ave 200 kg of fuel saving per aircraft 1,900 tonnes of CO2 saving per year Reduction in aircraft noise Reduction in CO2 & NOx emissions

5 Standard Instrument Departures (SID’s) & Standard Arrival Routes (STAR’s)
LBA currently operates six SID’s which have been redesigned to ensure they remain within the existing Noise Preferential Route (NPR). STAR’s are not currently operated due to insufficient airspace to accommodate them. The introduction of five STAR’s alongside an increase in the volume of airspace will allow more effective management of aircraft operations. Provides high levels of predictability for aircrews & air traffic controllers on arrival routes thus flying more accurately, safer, quieter and using less fuel. Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) will guide aircraft more accurately than ground based beacons which are being phased out.

6 LBA Airspace Change – Noise Preferential Routes

7 LBA Airspace Change - Timeframe
