16 How Buddha challenged Hinduism
Rejected many ideas in the Vedas. Challenged the Brahmins. Said that individuals control their own salvation. Opposed the caste system. Buddha’s hatred for the caste system won him more followers. Buddha challenged some traditional Hindu thoughts. Buddha did not believe in animal sacrifice. He told people not to follow the Vedas. Didn’t think the rituals were necessary for enlightenment. People who were rejected to nirvana would be reborn until they reached it. Everyone should follow 8 fold path properly.

17 Buddhism spreads 200 years after Buddha’s death, the teachings went through India. Asoka, an Indian king built Buddhist schools and temples. Missionaries- were sent to spread the religion throughout Asia. Silk road would help spread Buddhism. After his death, 500 of Buddha’s followers met together to make sure Buddha’s teachings were done correctly. Buddha died in 483 BC. These missionaries went to Sri Lanka in 251 BC. Went to Himalayans and Southwest Asia. Central Asia and Persia

18 Buddhism splits 2 major branches of Buddhism after disagreements.
1. Mahayana- People can use Buddha’s teachings to help reach nirvana. They adjusted the teachings. 2. Theravada- Follow the teachings of Buddha as they were written originally. There are millions of these 2 types of Buddhists to this day.
