1 Delaware THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) is the only federal agency whose mission includes support for all fields of fundamental science and engineering. BY THE NUMBERS Delaware in FY 2016 $45 Million: NSF funds awarded 32nd: National ranking in NSF funds 9: NSF-funded institutions 126: NSF grants awarded “In university, corporate, and government laboratories across the United States and throughout the world, scientists and engineers are creating the new knowledge and technologies that could create a better life for the billions of people living on earth today and the billions more who will be born during this century.” − Dr. Thomas Connelly, Former Executive Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer, DuPont EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED RESEARCH IN DELAWARE Researchers at the University of Delaware and Yale University have created a tiny polymer that self-assembles into a structure that changes color from white to orange when exposed to an electric current. The particle could be used to improve the energy efficiency of electronic inks used in e-readers. A team at Delaware State University is developing new devices to proactively monitor patient health status. The project depends upon use of machine perception and sensory motor learning to recognize a person’s degrading health in a home care environment. NSF-funded researchers at the University of Delaware are working to develop new methods for detecting the production of compounds by plants that are toxic to other plants. The trait was first discovered in invasive reeds. 2 Delaware Since 1952, NSF has supported nearly 50,000 graduate students through research fellowships. Delaware received $2 million in NSF educational funding in FY 2016. THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) not only funds cutting-edge research at institutions across the country; NSF’s education initiatives ensure the U.S. will remain a global leader in innovation for generations to come. EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN DELAWARE Delaware Technical and Community College is incorporating renewable energy topics into existing technology programs in order to train students to enter the workforce for new green industries. The NSF-supported program also provides outreach activities to local middle schools and high schools. Delaware State University hosts a Research Experience for Undergraduates program that provides students the opportunity to gain hands on experience in molecular genetics and genomics. The program provides individual mentoring and exposure to internship and employment opportunities in government, academia, and industry. A researcher at the University of Delaware created self-contained, miniature ecosystems called “Winogradsky columns,” where the interactions among microbial communities can be seen. The columns are a feature of K-12 classrooms around the state. Courtesy: “Our ability to put Delawareans to work depends in part on whether we build on our legacy of innovation. We have a rich history of invention in Delaware, and it’s time to write a new chapter… We are particularly focused on supporting our teachers of science, technology, engineering and math. Many jobs in the future will be in these STEM fields.” − Jack Markell, Former Governor Jack Markell “This is where our research will find a home built on the foundation of openness and collaboration. This is where new discoveries will redefine what we know, what we expect, what we imagine is possible and what we commit to doing once we realize the boundaries – the limitations – are gone.” − Dr. Patrick T. Harker, Former President of University of Delaware Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF) 
