1 NA CONSOLIDATION & SAFETY SYSTEMS
Y. Kadi, F. Gautheron, E. Solodko, M. Wilhelmsson 90th EA Technical Meeting, 17 October 2017

2 North Area Consolidation & Safety Systems
Status Discussions with groups still ongoing: BE-ICS, EN-EA, EN-CV, EN-HE, SMB, TE-CRG, TE-MSC, HSE, HSE-RP, EN-STI, EN-EL, TE-EPC, TE-MPE, TE-VSC, BE-BI, BE-CO, IT-CS Plans for LS2/LS3 much clearer Urgent actions for LS2 covered in NA-CONS but not all approved Budget/Manpower requests being collected Implementing failure statistics for NA Survey launched EMP Energy Saving Y. Kadi, North Area Consolidation & Safety Systems

3 Failure Stats: preliminary analysis

4 Flammable Gas Detection & ODH
New distribution of flammable gas detectors and ODH in EHN1 (D. Jaillet 83rd EATM) Pending installation for the Saleve side ( ). Cabling to be performed. DIC received by EN-EL (J.C. Guillaume) from M. Averna. EN-EL has declared to be available for this task. Flammable gas detectors renovation in EHN2 Activity shifted to LS2 - Drafted DIC sent to EN-EL, but to be finalized. J.C Guillaume ’s: “pour l’instant le câblage est prévu dans la zone nord après les campagnes de câblage de l’anneau (SPS) fin 2020”. A request for a risk assessment should be addressed to HSE for flammable gas and ODH risks in to confirm the needs: EHN2 (dept. EP). Check if the actual location / number/ sensibility of gas detectors around the experiment is still fitting with the needs. bldg. 908 (gas barrack – dept. EN, risk assessment to reduce number of relief valves. Flammable gas detectors renovation in ECN3 Hydrogen detection in the cavern (mixing area) and barrack (bldg. 918) Y. Kadi, North Area Consolidation & Safety Systems

5 Fire Detection & Beam Imminent Warning
Risk to be assessed by HSE, status report required Detection technology to be deployed Fire doors? Segmentation along beam lines? ….not necessary same needs than SPS Issues already known: Absence of smoke evacuation in the NA beam tunnels Obsolete sprinklers Surface buildings: Evacuation alarm to be renovated 30 km of PVC pipe (air sampling network) must be removed Where? ECN3, BA82, EHN2, TDC2, TCC2, BA80 When? RUN3 & LS3 Y. Kadi, North Area Consolidation & Safety Systems

6 Cryogenics Installations
Items already treated (maintenance or consolidation): All compressors and cold boxes are OK UNICOS migration already performed for all the cryo controls NA62 consolidation (LN2 transfer line for liquid krypton, valves) done To be consolidated: 6 centrifugal pumps for experimental SC magnets (6x150 kCHF) Urgent: 3.3kV cells for control and compressors (bldg. 895) -> EN-EL by end of 2020 => NA62 included Stop renting and purchase large LN2 storages (2x20000 l + 1x50000 l) -> 440 kCHF (from a 2014 cost estimate): long term savings… Y. 7 North Area Consolidation & Safety Systems
Magnets - TE-MSC Current situation: 426 beam line magnets in total Spares magnets are available for almost all the families Activities to be done for 2017: zero-field probe replacement, exchange of manifolds, ELETTA refurbishing, renovation of electrical interconnections Possible safety audit: Inspection not needed: TE-MSC aware of all the issues related to safety and reliability Known issues: electrical safety conformity, water leaks, shimming of the coils, replacement of polyurethane pads for the magnets supports Energy Balance program upgrade: The program should be validated by physicists Only ~116 solid yoke magnets can be replaced by laminated ones Some of these magnets are of the same families as for the EA Future actions: TE-MSC to provide to EN-DSO past history of leaks/incidents TE-MSC to prepare work unit description EN-DSO to update risk assessment and issue recommendations Magnet interlock standardization required Energy saving study progressing Y. Kadi, North Area Consolidation & Safety Systems

8 Civil Engineering - SMB-SE
Issues which can potentially be included in the consolidation program : Infiltration of ground water in the tunnels Motorized doors renovation False floors Drainage networks Roofs In case of upgrade, all the works will be contemplated in the context of the equipment groups/users future requirements; Items that should be included in possible safety diagnostic: Systems for smoke evacuation (sky domes more appropriate than extraction) Presence of asbestos Future actions: EN-EA to contact TSOs and users of all NA buildings SMB-SE to fill in the work unit description documents False floor becoming safety concern => urgent action (LS2) ? Y. Kadi, North Area Consolidation & Safety Systems

9 Cooling & Ventilation - EN-CV
EN-CV group is well advanced in terms of identification of consolidation activities. Three work unit description documents were received a month ago. The activities for 2017/2018: TDC2/TCC2 ventilation: 5/8 power cubicles already done. Renew remaining 3 power cubicles during YETS 2017/2018 Chilled water renovation all along the years except during LS2 BA80 and BA82: soft start of the pumps Activities planned for LS2: Chilled water pipe renovation Renovation of the cooling towers power control system (building 893) Replace backing of the cooling towers Activities post-LS2: Renovation of the ventilation system of all surface buildings (BAs) Work on the compressed air system during the YETS and EYETS Renovation of the Ventilation system of the gas building Continue the soft start of the pumps Future actions: EN-CV to provide remaining work unit description documents Ventilation study for ODH in underground galleries Indexation of the ventillation in TCC8 Y. Kadi, North Area Consolidation & Safety Systems

10 Handling & Transport - EN-HE
The activities for 2017/2018: Currently no activities are to be done for this year Replacement of lifts alarm (not with NA-CONS budget) Activities to be done during LS2: B. 889 (BA 80) crane revamping + remote operations B. 888 (EHN2) cranes PR-0539 & PR-0545 revamping or electrical renovation B. 886 (TCC2) cranes PR-0537 & PR-0544 revamping or replacement Activities post-LS2: B. 889 (BA 80) lift B. 912 (PP851) lift BAA85 lift Future actions: EN-HE to provide work unit description documents Y. Kadi, North Area Consolidation & Safety Systems

11 Secondary Beam Lines - EN-EA
Urgent Safety requirements Buffer zone and RP monitor in BA80 SUSI for EHN2 Closing of galleries in EHN1 and ODH Key cabinet in EHN1 Dry vacuum pumps for TCC2 Gas safety (safety valves, check valves, purging systems) Collimator renovation 9 collimators in total this year (program will continue) Beam line items renovations Fellows and TTE for NA-CONS Study PJAS for Cesar Bend 7 Gas rack for XCET Note that gas renovation measures are reported separately Complete review incl. spares Critical items have been identified Y.
