Overview of the Functional Skills qualification How do we communicate? Widening your vocabulary Follow seating plan as students’ enter, play music, allow 2 mins to check phones and then turn off/ put away, store bags - register

5 Resources… Workbooks A pen CGP books
Write name on front, don’t skip pages, explain objectives sheets, explain tracking sheets – will come back to the skills ‘bit’ later

6 On the front of your work books…
Your name and student number (if you know it) Thursday daytime adult functional skills Tutor- Naomi Goodhew

7 Write… I’m going to give you two minutes to write about ANYTHING you want I will not check it

8 See if you can find three errors in your piece of writing
If you can find more, correct them!

9 All about me… Spend 20-25 minutes on this task…
It will help me to cater to YOUR needs in these sessions. 20 mins – 1-1 discussions and start to build a group profile – sheet can be scanned onto Pro Monitor

10 Welcome – group expectations:
What are YOUR expectations? On a post it note, write down, - 1 thing you expect from me - 1 thing you expect from your classmates - 1 thing you can offer to the class 5 mins

Bring your book to every session- or leave it here Treat my room and each other with respect 5 mins

12 Qualification City and Guilds Functional skills English

13 Studying English Functional Skills – 5 levels (entry 1 to level 2)
3 assessments: Reading Writing Speaking and listening You need to pass all 3 assessments to get the qualification

14 Reading Retrieving information from documents. Paper based or online assessment. (Level 1 and 2 online) You can be entered for this at any point during the year. Length of exam: E3 – 40 minutes L1 & L2 – 1 hour 10 minutes

15 Writing Writing two documents (usually a persuasive piece of text like a letter/ , a speech or an article) paper based or online (level 1 and 2 only) You can be entered for this at any point throughout the year. Length of exam: E3 – 40 minutes L1 & L2 – 1 hour 20 minutes

16 Speaking and Listening
Speaking and listening assessments as agreed by your tutor. E3 – Two discussions L1 – One formal discussion based on an unfamiliar topic and one informal discussion based on a familiar topic. L2 - One familiar topic of presentation and a discussion based on an unfamiliar topic. Both must be no longer than 30 minutes.

17 Practice assessments We have several practise assessments for you to have a go at Dates: when you are ready!

18 Which level will you be taking?
This will depend on the diagnostics you have sat at your interview your prior achievements and which level you need

19 How do we communicate? In your groups, write some different ways in which we communicate with each other Use the paper available Are they EFFECTIVE forms of communication? As you complete this task, I will speak to you all individually.

20 With your list… Divide them into: Speaking and listening Reading
Writing (some may fir into more than one)

21 Miscommunication Write about a time where communication has been lost or misunderstood Try to write at least a paragraph It does not need to be true! Remember to proofread- I will help you with this if needed

22 The power of the English language
English is very powerful There are many words in English which have the same or similar meanings. These are called SYNONYMS What type of book would you find a list of these words in?

23 Divide your page into four columns
Big (huge, enormous…) Small (tiny…) Good (amazing…) Bad (horrible…) Think of as many synonyms as you can!

24 With these words… Describe a place using some of these words. Eg:
A town A room A country An object The choice is yours! Try to use complete sentences and joining words where you can.

25 Reflect How do you feel about studying English this year?
What do you feel you need to work on in these sessions? Do you feel comfortable working in your group? Try to write a paragraph, or in complete sentences.
