Oceanic islands are islands not located near any continents. Oceanic islands are (as it says in its name) in the ocean mainly around the equator. Many plants and animals are variable depending on the island, oceanic islands are often formed by volcanoes and volcanoes are located near the equator. This means main vegetation is tropical, the weather almost always stays the same and is moist, hot and wet! Oceanic islands are formed due to volcanic plates shifting, one plate subducts under the other causing the second plate to rise, however it may take thousands of years to actually become inhabited. The ocean rift rising can also be a cause for an oceanic islands existence! Mariana Islands, the Aleutian Islands and most of Tonga in the Pacific Ocean are all created by plates subducting under each other (see previous page).
