Pronunciation: O - She - anic I - lands Oceanic islands are islands NOT near any continents!
2
Oceanic Islands!? Oceanic islands are islands not located near any continents. Oceanic islands are (as it says in its name) in the ocean mainly around the equator. Many plants and animals are variable depending on the island, oceanic islands are often formed by volcanoes and volcanoes are located near the equator. This means main vegetation is tropical, the weather almost always stays the same and is moist, hot and wet! Animals are mainly insects and there are a few komodo dragons and loads of loads of birds! --- Personal experience (Because we learned in class that they are around the equator, and that’s where I am!)
3
Oceanic island fauna Oceanic islands have some reptiles, but they evolve and become very large. Island flora and fauna are particularly vulnerable to extinction, and animals brought on to islands by humans can wreak havoc. --- (UNKNOWN source) Oceanic islands are favourite holiday destinations for humans and uncontrolled tourism can destroy habitats, especially along the coasts. Large areas of island vegetation have been cleared for pineapple plantations in Hawaii WWF (

Oceanic island flora The plants on oceanic islands are mainly from around the equator... seaweed, palm trees and tropical plants dominate the island. Many of these plants are either endangered or critically endangered, due to the destruction of the plant’s habitat destruction, many people like the various colours of these plants, humans then take these plants to other locations. Plants are not used to being moved and for the plants being moved from the rich island soil to polluted garden soil resulting in extinction! --- BGCI (

How exactly are they made?
Oceanic islands are formed due to volcanic plates shifting, one plate subducts under the other causing the second plate to rise, however it may take thousands of years to actually become inhabited. The ocean rift rising can also be a cause for an oceanic islands existence! The last reason for an oceanic island formation is when they are formed over volcanic hotspots and many changes take place Wikipedia (

Name some oceanic islands!
Mariana Islands, the Aleutian Islands and most of Tonga in the Pacific Ocean are all created by plates subducting under each other (see previous page). More examples include some of the Lesser Antilles islands and the South Sandwich Islands (now renamed Hawaii). Some examples for ocean rift rising to cause oceanic islands include Iceland and Jan Mayen. An example for volcanic hotspots causing oceanic islands to form include the hawaiian islands (Sandwich Islands)! --- Wikipedia (
