In the United States, about 14 million people work in the hospitality industry.
There are many different businesses within the hospitality industries, allowing a diverse range of careers.

Careers in the Food and Beverage Segment
Front-of-the-House- area in a hospitality business that guest usually see. Work directly with guest. Main responsibilities include: seating guest, selling food, transmitting orders to the kitchen, serving customers, bussing tables and obtaining payment from customers. Front-of-the-House Staff: Restaurant Managers Host/Hostess Server Bussers Cashiers

Careers in the Food and Beverage Segment
Back-of-the-House-area in a hospitality business that guest usually do not see. Work does not directly involve interaction with guest. Main responsibilities include: food production, purchasing and receiving, marketing and sales, human resources, accounting, security and engineering and maintenance. Back-of-the-House Staff: Executive Chef Sous-Chef Kitchen Manager Steward Food Preparers Chefs, Cooks

Front Office Staff-handles everything related to selling sleeping rooms and interacting with guest. Front office manager: Managing front desk Reservations department: Handling reservations Sales Agents

Front Office Staff cont: Front desk department: Front desk agents Uniformed service department: Door and Bell attendants Parking and transportation staff. Example: Valet Concierges Telecommunications department: Operators Wake up calls

Housekeeping-responsible for keeping the hotel clean Executive Housekeeper: Managing housekeeping department and budget. Assistant Housekeeper: Inspector of rooms. Room attendants. House staff supervisor: Concentrates on the cleanliness of the main public areas.

Housekeeping cont: Laundry Supervisor: Laundry attendants Seamsters Contract Services: In-house housekeeping services: housekeepers are part of the hotel Contract housekeeping services: performed by a company that is not part of the hotel.

Marketing and Sales: promoting the hotel and providing group rates for rooms and meeting rooms Human Resources: hiring of hotel personnel Accounting: Controlling the finances of the company. Security: Keeping the hotel property safe Engineering: responsible for the physical facilities of the hotel. Examples: Repairs, maintenance, deep cleaning and grounds keeping.

Characteristics of hotel employees: Great interpersonal and communication skills Providing non-verbal communication through eye contact. Providing patience and empathy with customer. Maintaining professional appearance.

Travel agent-an individual who works at a retail business that brings travelers and travel industry suppliers together. Rental Car agents- rents vehicles to travelers. Bus drivers-Transport travelers around the country Train operator-Transports travelers around the country by train.

Flight attendants- Tend to travelers needs while they travel by plane. Pilots-Employees who fly airplanes. Airplane technicians- Employees who repair and conduct maintenance on airplanes. Airport personnel-Employees who provide customer service at airports across the world.

Tour Guides: Working with people to give tours of different locations. Party Planners: scheduling events/parties. Visitor Center employees: Sales Managers, sales consultants, Marketing and Sales representatives and receptionists.
