2 Background The BWM Convention is the global standards on ballast water management The Adriatic Sea unique and highly sensitive environment an important waterway

3 Aims of the Strategy To provide a regional framework
To enhance regional cooperation and capacity building in BWM matters To ensure protection and conservation of the Adriatic marine environment To encourage the effective implementation of the BWM System

4 Guiding principles: Tools and Measures
Establishment of adequate institutional communication channels Improvement of institutional capacities and response capabilities Development and implementation of programs leading to identification and protection of sensitive areas and activities Compliance monitoring, enforcement programs and activities developed through BALMAS Project Increased public awareness

5 Goal 1: Pre-conditions for an Effective Implementation of the BWM Convention, 2004
Suitable national legal frameworks Institutional arrangements and communication Availability of resources

6 Goal 2: Harmonized Implementation of Measures and Procedures through the use of BALMAS BWM Tools
