Here There and Everywhere

2 Demonstrative Adjectives
Adjective: means we are going to describe nouns. Demonstrative: means the adjective will demonstrate where the noun is.

3 Where are we? Aquí: Here Allí: There Allá: Over There
In Spanish there are 3 ranges of location that we need to know: Aquí: Here Allí: There Allá: Over There

4 Aquí When we talk about things that are “here,” we use the words “this and these.” This and these have T’s Este Esta Estos Estas

5 Aquí Practice This book is good. This person is crazy.
Este libro es bueno. This person is crazy. Esta persona es loca. These dogs are cute. Estos perros son bonitos. These pens are broken. Estas plumas son rotas.

6 Allí When we talk about things that are “there,” we use the words “that and those.” That and those don’t have T’s Ese Esa Esos Esas

7 Allí Practice That book is bad. That person is big.
Ese libro es malo. That person is big. Esa persona es grande. Those dogs are ugly. Esos perros son feos. Those pens are perfect. Esas plumas son perfectas.

8 Allá When we talk about things that are “over there,” we use the different words Over there… Aquel Aquella Aquellos Aquellas

9 Allá Practice That book (over there) is boring.
Aquel libro es aburrido. That person (over there) is athletic. Aquella persona es atlética. Those dogs (over there) are fast. Aquellos perros son rápidos. Those pens (over there) are mine. Aquellas plumas son mías.

10 Put it Together This cat is bigger than my cat.
That dog is smarter than my dog. This cat is smaller than that dog. That person over there has more money. This boy is more interesting than that girl. This class is better than that class over there.

Pronoun: means we are going to replace nouns. Demonstrative: means the pronoun will demonstrate where the noun is.

14 Aquí If we already know what noun we’re talking about, we can replace a demonstrative adjective and noun with a demonstrative pronoun: Este libro  éste Esta persona  ésta Estos libros  éstos Estas personas  éstas

15 Aquí Practice I like those books more than this one.
Me gustan esos libros más que éste. I like that class more than this one. Me gusta esa clase más que ésta. I don’t want those books. I want these ones. Yo no quiero esos libros. Quiero éstos. I don’t know those girls. I know these ones. Yo no conozco a esas chicas. Conozco a éstas.

17 Allí Practice I don’t want this pop, I want that one.
No quiero este refresco. Quiero ése. I don’t like this pen. I want that one. No me gusta esta pluma. Quiero ésa. I need pencils. Give me those ones. Necesito lápices. Dame ésos. I want skirts. Show me those ones. Quiero faldas. Muéstrame ésas.

Este hombre es más alto que aquél. This movie is worse than that one over there. Esta película es peor que aquélla. These books are more boring than those ones over there. Estos libros son más aburridos que aquéllos. These apples are better than those ones over there. Estas manzanas son mejores que aquéllas.

Neutered Pronouns Yup. That’s what they’re called.

21 Demonstrative Pronouns
Pronoun: means we are going to replace nouns. Neutered: means we don’t know the gender.

22 That Over There: Aquello
Three Little Words If we don’t know the gender of an object, we can use neutered pronouns. This: Esto That: Eso That Over There: Aquello

23 Context At the grocery store check out line, cashiers often ask about produce: ¿Qué es esto? When I think a student might be on their cell phone, but I don’t know, I ask: ¿Qué es eso? If I see something scurry by in the hallway and I don’t know what it was, I ask: ¿Qué es aquello?
