6 SURREALISM IN MEXICO

7 (#140) THE TWO FRIDAS Frida Kahlo, The Two Fridas, 1939, oil on canvas
Juxtaposition of two self-potraits Left – Kahlo dressed as Spanish lady in white lace Right – Kahlo dressed as a Mexican peasant -> stiffness and provincial quality of folk art is her inspiration Her two hearts are twined together by veins that are cut by scissors at one end and lead to a portrait of her husband Diego Rivera, at the other end -> painted at the time of their divorce Barren landscape against a wildly active sky Blood on her lap suggests many abortions and miscarriages, also her surgeries relating to her polio Critics describe her work as surrealism, even though she rejected this label (#140) THE TWO FRIDAS

10 CONSTRUCTIVISM – SOVIET ART

11 (#137) ILLUSTRATION FROM THE RESULTS OF THE FIRST FIVE-YEAR PLAN

12 (#136) COMPOSITION WITH RED, BLUE AND YELLOW
The De Stijl (literally, "the style") art movement was founded in It encompassed a new type of style in modern art and architecture. This movement used the artistic talent of the artists by designing homes, buildings, and furniture. They were eager to develop a new aesthetic consciousness and an objective art based on clear principles. Their work and research extended to the fine arts, city and town planning, the applied arts and philosophy. Art was seen as a collective approach, with a language that went beyond cultural, geographical and political divisions. The depersonalization of the artwork was carried through into the execution which was anonymous and impersonal. The artist's personality took a back seat to a conscious and calculated working process The key ideas underpinning the movement could not be separated from Piet Mondrian's aesthetic theory of Neo- Plasticism. This theory was aimed at scaling down the formal components of art - only primary colors and straight lines. The principles of De Stijl art and design exerted tremendous influence on the Bauhaus Style in Germany in the 1920s, and after Mondrian's immigration to New York in 1940, the U.S.A

13 PIET MONDRIAN PIET MONDRIAN, Composition in Red, Blue, and Yellow, Oil on canvas De Stijl artists reduced their artistic vocabulary to simple geometric elements Only primary colors used: red, yellow, blue and the neutrals white and black Severe geometry of form -> only right angles/grid like forms No shading of colors *DE STIJL

15 FALLINGWATER FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT, Kaufmann House (Fallingwater), 1939
One of the most famous and iconic buildings in 20th century architecture Accent on the horizontal nature of the prairie -> long, ground hugging lines of the building Cantilever construction -> porches extend over waterfall -> architecture in harmony with site Living room contains glass curtain wall around three of four sides -> embraces the woods around it Irregularity and complexity of ground plan and design
